arsenal seem to have a habit of producing young players with chips on their shoulders,cole bentley pennant etc-im all for what wenger has done for us but it seems the arsenal way of doing things with dignity seems to have passed them by.the whole sky/money thing seems to have kicked the pride and passion out of the game.its players with this kind of attitude that make the england team what it is.the fa should stipulate that any english player who refuses to play for their country at any level should be banned from the domestic game unless injured

It was largely down to his performances over the season that got him noticed, not one game- he has always been touted as a future international.

You're argument about past players is valid but he isn't saying 'i'm not playing because i am too good and no decent players have ever played in this shitty competition anyway' he is simply admitting that he isn't up for it. A bit lame maybe but lets give the kid a break. Oh, and i'm not going to begin to mention the players who have played in this competition but now play in relative obscurity.

AND, anyone who thinks he won't play for England over the next couple of years is wrong and i am more than willing to put a wager on it. Name your price.

Or because we would like to think that players given the chance to represent their country at any level would take that opportunity. That a player who may one day play for his country has stitched up the U21's because he basically can't be arsed.

I personally do not see the problem. He has played something like 50+ games for Blackburn this season, plus 5 or so U21 games. Perhaps he is drained? It seems he has a real chance at making the 1st team and I wouldn't want to jeopardise my place by playing U21 football at the end of a long season. True, it has been very poor timing, but I don't imagine that he made this decision lightly.

I was extremely impressed with him vs Italy U21s and he has been in great form for Blackburn. As stated previously, so much better than Downing and hopefully he will be in the 1st team soon.

In issues like this I ask myself "What would the Australian cricket team do?"

They are the best in the world and their man-management is superb. Bentley's actions are akin to someone like Ravi Bopara or Stuart Broad blowing out a winter tour to Bangladesh with the A-team.

I suspect that an Australian cricketer who had left his squad a man light and blown out the chance to play for his country would be given the cold shoulder for a minimum of 2 years until such time as he had scored so many runs domestically he would have earned a recall.

Bentley is a good player but nothing special. I say f*** him.
