It was a very weak excuse from Bentley. I agree with earlier posts, does he really know what tiredness is !!. For f**ks sake the guy gets shed loads of money and he can't be arsed to pull on a pair of boots. TART !!
I can understand why he did it but it has probably f***ed his chance for playing for England again. We have much better strikers than him anyway with Owen, Rooney, Crouch, Defoe and Zamora (if Mclaren ever decides to take the chance on him)
He did also just come back from Estonia with the England squad and took the advice of senior players who said that by December they would be exhausted (which isnt good because he will be more prone to injury)
Bentley shouldn't be in the under 21 squad anyway, he should be a full time senior player by now. He's 10 times the player that Stuart "mediocre" Downing will ever be.

Lets face it, who here hasnt ever pulled a 'sickie' from work because they cant be botherd to go in?
He will have had a rest before linking up with the England squad, the season ended on May 13th for him, and he was not too tired to turn down an England call, besides which all that is is a dew days training. And if England did go all the way he'd have just under two weeks before the season got under way, given the fact that most players at the top level will keep doing some form of training during the summer I don't see that it will make a massive difference. There is also the fact that his replacement in the team will be Milner, who has played more games and whose season began in August in the Intertoto. Its the poxy under 21's? Who cares- he isn't even under 21 anymore!
Give the kid a break i reckon. Remember, he is the only player to be involved in both teams and as such will have NO rest till a week before the next season.

There's also the fact that he waited until the eve of the tournament to pull out, leaving us unable to call up a replacement. Is he more tired now than he was when the squad was announced on May 30th?
As for the fact is is "only" the U21s, it was largely down to Bentley's performance against Italy OU21s that got him into the senior squad, if he had starred in this tournament he would surely have cemented his squad place. Also it would undoubtedly help him improve as a player, and there are many better players than David Bentley taking part in this tournament, with more international experience.
You look at the names that have performed at these youth tournaments and gone onto the biggest stages and become household names you'd soon realise it's a privilege to take part in the tournament. Recently the likes of Klass Jan-Huntelaar and Ryan Babel two players who have taken part in Champions League football have thrived in this tournament, they had gotten a taste of the full Dutch national team but still jumped at the chance to play in this tournament, when Italy won it the likes of Alberto Gilardino, Daniele Bonera, Daniele De Rossi and Christian Zaccardo playing and have gone onto bigger and better things playing for Italy and for some of the biggest clubs in world football, in 2000 the likes of Andrea Pirlo, Rino Gatusso (who both helped Italy win this - and the World Cup), Frank Lampard and Ledley King were all been involved for their countries, Spain won it with the likes of Valeron, Salgado and Guti involved, Italy won it in '96 Totti, Nesta, Cannavaro, Panucci, Vieri, Del Piero were all involved. Their progress was clearly hampered by it.
England could go on and win the thing and Bentley might never get selected in any England set up again. Had he gone and played well then his stock would be very high and he would easily break into the full England side.
If by some freak occurrence we qualify for Euro 2008, he will surely not be considered as we cannot afford to take players who might not be fit enough to take part...
