Think he is in for a shock at Newcastle if I’m honest.
I’d imagine their timescales for success and results are far quicker than what we’ve been expecting from him.

The things he is being brought in to do (if the Saudi PIF has any sense) take ages. Sorting out the football side from academy upwards will take years to produce meaningful and measurable results. It's a different story for managers there I'd imagine, but if they've got any sense (and there's no reason to think the people running a sovereign wealth fund are anything but shrewd - it's not some crazy billionaire wanting a plaything), a director of football will be given time unless it's an obvious disaster from the start.

Also I believe his success will depend on the support he has around him, whilst it’s clear he has helped us I’m sure a big chunk of what he has done has been due to the team and the support he has every day.

He'll have more 'support' in terms of budget, which will make life a bit easier. It remains to be seen who else he'll be working with, but I doubt their recruitment has finished. It's going to be very difficult to beat our set-up in terms of the people immediately above and below, but he has seemingly done a good job at the FA and WBA beforehand without that great support, so will fancy his chances again.

I’m not as nervous as some are surrounding recruitment and scouting of players, it’s very obvious that isn’t down to him as we have two other people in charge of that who then report into Ashworth. I’m sure if they find a good player it will still be dealt with in the same way and we aren’t going to suddenly miss out on players to Newcastle.

Absolutely this. It's a blow to lose someone doing a great job, but the way we are run means it won't bring the whole project crashing down. There's now a very attractive vacancy either for someone internal to progress, or to find the next up and coming DoF to finish the job Dan Ashworth started (Marc Overmars could do a job ??? :jester:)

Succession planning rising up TB’s agenda. The black and white stripes are a real threat. Though unlikely, I’ll be wishing even harder than before they go down.
Not likely though, is it - the five players they got in the January window are all sigificant upgrades.

Presumably you'd add Paul Barber to this list, given he will have spent a decade at the Albion in a couple of months. :)

I am not anti-Barber as some might think, I can see he has his hands on the reigns. I didn't like his rigidity in shirtgate, but maybe he has learned from that.

Are you his makeup boy, pre tv interviews Chailey???

Without sounding too churlish, I hope Saudi FC are in the championship next season.

This news has not changed my view on this one bit.

I would love it LOVE IT if they go down

Which is pretty much 99% of football. Why did Brighton born and bred Lewis Dunk want to try and go to Fulham all those years back?

What do you think this post has added to the conversation besides stating the obvious?

This is predictable and the Club will need to be nimble to survive and thrive in this billionaire environment. I have faith in Tony Bloom but the metaphorical cards are always stacked against clubs outside the big 7 (which now includes Saudi FC)

God forbid somebody moved jobs to try and better themselves. What an ********.

This.

Newcastle may be relegation fodder but there is massive potential. We may not like the new owners but most of the carping on here reads like envy to me. They are the legal, approved owners.

And who would turn down the offer to legally double their income, probably with a longish contract to boot? Until you've been there, any condemnation is just hot air.

Also, where are the goons who kept posting about 'useless' Ashworth, 'what dose he even do?'. Surely they should be all over this thread, celebrating our liberation from the cold tank of sad syrup that has been preventing our acquisition of A Striker. ???

Edit: obviously I hope Ashworth fails and the club are relegated.

This was my thought once Weir was promoted. Continuity is key now and we don’t need someone in with a load of new ideas. We have the framework and we’ll continue to work in the manner we’ve built. A bit like the 1970s Liverpool.

And the post will nevertheless be advertised because (i) its the law and (ii) you never know.

Absolutely agree. The heart says 'this is an outrage...' and the head says 'who wouldn't make a similar decision'. I am more concerned with ongoing Albion player poaching from the northern moneybags, on Ashworth's recommendation......

I also agree that 'Khashoggi executioners and Wonga United' backers are unfit to own a football club..... but maybe similar comment might be applied to other Premier League Clubs.

I have to say, I am impressed with Newcastle.

How many Premier League and thrown hundreds millions of pounds around on expensive players? Loads of them. Whilst some clubs have been successful, it sometimes seems that success is only there until another (even richer) donor comes to another club. Look at Man United - they have spend millions upon millions since Fergie left, without really winning much at all.

Newcastle have seen that spending more than the others is not, in itself, a guarantee of success. By getting somebody in to oversee the footballing side of things from top-to-bottom, Newcastle have shown a serious statement of long term intent.

He's the right appointment for Newcastle, given what their plan is. It's a brilliant opportunity for him, blood money or not - there's money to spend there and there's the realistic chance of building a winning team. I can understand the criticism of him leaving given he's going to be banking serious cash - but from a job perspective, it offers him a lot and I can understand why he'd take it. I just hope we don't end up at West Brom did when he left them.

Wonder who we've got lined up. Seeing as this has been rumbling on for a while I assume Bloom already has a replacement in mind.

I hope it's not Marc Overmars

Incredibly disappointing, but I believe in this board and the work they always do and trust they'll get a fitting replacement.

Would love it even more if Newcastle get relegated now
