Seems a bit odd they sent two unarmed female officers to arrest a chap who was wanted for murder.

They didn't.

It's now believed Cregan called 999 anonymously, reporting some sort of fairly routine incident in order to lure police officers to the address. At which point he popped up, lobbed a grenade in their direction, and shot them both dead.

I had not heard about the killer before. Assume he was known to police??.

RIP to the officers killed.

What a bad man. The icing on top is our taxes will be used to house this guy for free for the rest of his life. Free accommodation, free food, free cleaning etc. It's a joke really. Either bring in some kind of forced labour or the death penalty

"Somebody", apparently, anonymously reported an attempted burglary at the address which is an empty council house.

Why? Because 2 were killed?

Don't get me wrong this bloke should go down for life and is an utter scumbag, and the police put their lives on the line everyday, but the death of two police officers miles away from Brighton won't change these peoples minds.

Just saying.

He won't get life. What is a life 'worth' in sentence terms 6 years maybe 1 or 2 more, for 15 to 20 years MAX out in TEN.

My guess would be that he (being a coward) preferred to do it on his own terms rather than ending up getting shot by armed response teams, or being picked up somewhere else and having to spend the journey to the nick in the back of a darkened van with a bunch of angry and grieving coppers.

My guess too. What I can't understand is why he gave a fake report of a burglary to lure the two policewomen, then kills them, but then he hands himself in.

Because he has one eye and is presumably well known on that estate, therefore he figured the game was almost up as somebody would spot him (especially once the £50k reward was raised).

Or, he's a just complete shit who just wanted to make a big statement before he went down for life. Could be either.

Harry Roberts shot and killed three police officers in 1966.

He is still in prison for this crime.

RIP these and all police officers that have put their life on the line for all of us.
