It was LeMond (my childhood hero!). Apparently the mechanic cut part of his saddle away.

I think he might also have ridden a tour stage with diarrhoea and just had it running down his legs for the last hour of the stage!

I remember as a kid seeing him crossing the line on a mountain stage ( Alpe D'huez I think ) and having to receive oxygen as he'd totally buried himself.

There's 2 Tour stories that I'm going to attribute to Greg, although I may be wrong.

1) The abscess was were I said. One of my early tour memories was watching him slather on a big wad of cream, underneath his bibs, at the start. Leaving nothing to the imagination as to where it was going.
It might even have been one of the years he won.

2) LeMond rode one year with dysentery, sh*te pouring down his legs.
He smelt worse than death, and nobody in the peloton could ride near him, except his faithful lieutenant Ernie Schaefer.
When Greg could no longer continue, and stepped off his bike, Schaefer silently did the same.
An act of loyalty, knarley old former pro and now Lance hating hack Paul Kimmage still dreams about.

****IT'S GREG LEMOND NIGHT HERE ON NSC****

He was shot and badly injured, in a hunting accident, between Tour victories.
To this day he still had 20 odd gun shot pellets, in him.

God I love Le Tour and all the stories it has.

Some say he rode a bike with square wheels, some say he trained with mountain goats in the Himalayas. All we know is he's Greg LeMond.
Nah this is JUST Greg LeMond night, you wait till some of the big boys have their NSC 15 mins of fame.
They make Greg look like a Sunday School teacher.

He is a god.
Your not wrong, the only googling I've done this evening is making sure I was spelling Ernie Schaefer right. (assuming all the stories are right-ish)

But at no point was he living with his Wife, Mistress and Step daughter and having 'relations' with all 3.
Now that's a story!

Lance Armstrong could lose Tour titles over alleged doping violations | Sport | The Guardian

Okay lets rewrite history, Armstrong ever present in our live following of the TDF, I still love to think he was pretty clean...

1999 Alex Zülle
2000 Jan Ullrich? Beloki more like
2001 Jan Ullrich? Beloki more like
2002 Joseba Beloki
2003 Now this ones a tough call but coming in at no 5 Haimar Zubeldia
2004 Andreas Klöden
2005 3rd place Francisco Mancebo

Beloki cliams his hatrick of wins 10 years after his last big result

I would love to believe that, but sadly I just can't.
Irrespective of the stories told by others, some have more validity than others.
I just can't see how ALL the others riders of that time, were guilty of drug abuse, but the fella who beat them all isn't.

Plus looking at that 'clean' list, I think you have to go further down the GC.

You'd struggle to find genuinely clean riders around then. There was a quote from someone in the 90s who said boardman was the only clean rider in the peloton.

My guess is Moreau might be the cleanest one there!!

Yeah that's what I thought too.
Mainly due to Credit Agricole Chris Boardman, and a history going back to Robert Millar and Z-team.

With no basis in fact, just gut feeling.
I think Spain will be the last to tow the line.

The Italians have far to many other nationalities in their races, where as the Spanish seem to be out on a limb.

80 pages now and growing by the day.

So the big question is...SB's official TdF thread for 2012 or keep it on this one ?
