Sorry to intrude on this long-established (actually somewhat intimidating) thread... but I'm finally getting back into cycling after 5 years out with back problems (which turned out to be psychological - my prime cycling years wasted). I did 65km on Saturday (Brighton - Lewes - Newhaven - Seaford - Alfriston - Berwick - Laughton - Ringmer - Lewes) and absolutely loved it.

Trouble is, I have a Specialized Sirus (now 13 years old) and great though it is, I need a racer. However, we're in the process of buying a house (and getting married on Saturday!) so I don't have a lot to spend. Where's the best place I can get a bike that's worth having, second hand, without spending the Earth? Ebay?

Surely we're not intimidating, we can't be when the only rule is 'be nice'.
I'm still reeling from slighting [MENTION=3858]Motogull[/MENTION], fingers crossed he didn't take offence.

I've been switched back onto ebay at [MENTION=18774]Rugrat[/MENTION]'s request, it's just a couple of pages back, and am shocked by the price known brands are selling for.

As Bold says there is a healthy sub £500 market, (search www.bikeradar.com for that particular buying guide).
Normally I'd be saying stay well clear, but I'm not so sure now that the second hand market must be at an all time high.

While on bikeradar there's a classifieds section for sale/wanted.
I think there are posting restrictions so if any newbie wants to go down that route, I'll happily start a thread on their behalf.

One other thing that's occurred to me is posting a wanted sign on local clubs social media pages.
It could result in a decent well maintained bike, although as a rule we are reluctant to off load bikes.

[MENTION=1320]Notters[/MENTION], Bold's hitting it out of the park today, yes carbon is lovely but it's nothing compared to losing the spare tyre.
(So I'm lead to believe, never having done it myself)

All bikes are different with different aspects.
My aluminium Bianchi is an absolute rocket, but is so 'solid' it's a very unforgiving ride, which I just couldn't do the miles on.
My carbon one is an armchair by comparison but would always lose in a sprint.
Before the end of the summer I will do a proper test an ride them both over my 10 mile course.


Seeing Notters enjoyment of a thumbs up, why don't we do that?

A half decent set of tyres and a track pump will go a long way to improving your ride.

How have the gears held up over time? a £20 service might be like a new bike.

That's a smegging good comeback ride.

I personally think its a pity we don't hurl abuse at each on strava as it happens. Its all light hearted.

A half decent set of tyres and a track pump will go a long way to improving your ride.

This. It's all very well having a Carlos Fandango bike with all sorts of go faster stripes, but I was gobsmacked what a difference some decent tyres and a track pump make - the latter should not be overlooked (unless you like masochistic bodybuilding with a conventional pump...), I now religiously check my tyres before every ride, for comfort, safety - and speed. It's a doddle with a track pump.

Seriously though, what is the point of the cameras. And the ridiculous descending pose is so crap! It's drops or tops in the tuck!

I know I should be enjoying that cycling is so popular but he looks like he'd just wind up car drivers until one of them takes a swipe at the next poor fella on a bike, who is minding his own business and adhering to the rules!

By the way, the red back tyre was for one ride while the new one was in the post!

That wasn't the first ride back, as you'll see on stava, but I've only been back in the saddle for a few weeks. Just done the north face of Devil's Dyke for the first time and didn't think I'd be able to do anything today after Saturday! Definitely getting fitter.

Re the gears they definitely change of their own accord more than I appreciate! Where would you recommend taking it for a service [MENTION=435]Stat Brother[/MENTION]? I got it from rayments originally.

Don't think there's anything wrong with my tyres but could be wrong? You're right about the pump though.
