Right, the moment several of you (I'm looking particularly at you, @Stat Brother) predicted has come. I need a new bike.
Firstly I/we say that to everyone.
Secondly and most importantly, there's no point buying a bike if you're not going to get a cap.

What you basically have is a choice between a Ford, Vauxhall, Honda & Toyota. (I'm not being derogatory)
4 very good bikes, keenly priced and won't let you down.

They are all the same, but different, you don't want to get too hung up on the intricacies of the spec.
Saying that though the wheels are important and as you're in the flat lands all you should need is a regular double chainset.

As said you need to try them all, if you're really lucky one will stand out, I have my doubts though, for the reasons above. (they are good bikes).

The bike you WILL ride the most is the one that makes you smile.

Bold is right in that you don't want to be sold short, but your heart needs to be heard too.
(You try and take his Bianchi off of him)

If you only make the decision with your head, weighing up this front brake v that rear sprocket, you may well miss the bike you'll do an extra 5,000 miles on, just cos you loves it.
I appreciate that all sounds a little twatty and 'far out man'.
But if you take to cycling and find yourself effortlessly sailing along a flat road with a tail wind and the sun on your back, in harmony on your bike that you love, (what's not too love) you won't give a flying fudge if it's Tiagra 105 or Huret 5 speed.

Helmet, pedals, shoes, clothing all do come at a price, so don't over stretch on the bike (in every sense of the word)

Anyone recommend a good place to sell my ageing hybrid bike? I replaced it the other week with a budget road bike (my first one), so want to try and sell my old bike for 20-30 quid. Should I put it on eBay or just lock it up somewhere with a big "For Sale" sign like some second-hand cars are? Thanks.

Get it on ebay, clean it up and big it up. Starting price £40.

What did you buy?

For just £225, an Apollo Fusion racer from Halfords. It works like clockwork, although it took a bit of time to get used to the riding position and less responsive brakes. I've only ever owned mountain and hybrid bikes, but seeing as I only cycle on roads, getting a racer is the sensible choice for my next bike.

My old hybrid is a Saracen Ventura? Something like that.

And I'll look into the Friday Ad, because obviously I'm looking for people in the local area who are interested, not wanting to ship it out to the other end of the country. Thanks again!

Cool, I'm slightly concerned by the brakes, although MB disc brakes do put ours to shame.
How are you coping with speed v comfort?

You know what will look good with your bike ...

(it's the last freakin one you can't blame me for trying.)

I think it's just a case of the brakes being a bit stiff for the first month or two. They work fine coming to a halt at traffic lights, say, but compared to the brakes on my previous bikes, these ones wouldn't stop me as well if I were ploughing down a steep incline.

I'm not going to lie, my poor buttocks were suffering with the hard saddle at first, so I paid out a little extra for a softer gel seat to be fitted instead. And the speed is impressive, especially at the higher gears, even going into a headwind :) Cycling from Ferring to Brighton for work takes a little over 90 minutes now. Compared to almost 2 hours with my hybrid.

Good stuff, sounds like you're travelling at speeds that would blow a bespoke NSC/Albion cycling cap clean off your head.

Can I get the last cap? Sorry I didn't read all 389 previous pages to know if it's still available (going off Stat Brother's signature) :)

No probs, just read the previous 7775 posts, answer a simple 500 point questionnaire, and it's as good as yours.

PM's coming your way.

Popped my bike down to Rayment Cycles yesterday as it had a few niggles. It's come back with a new chainset and bottom bracket - just as well I took her down!

You can enter on the day if you fancy joining us.....

That's leaving it late! The sun had better come out...see you bright and early on saturday.
