I'm toying with the idea of getting a hybrid bike for general fitness and cycle path/bike path (cuckoo trail style) with my 7 year old son. Bike is not for road use like commuting but by same token I don't intend bombing through the woods hence not thinking mountain bike.
Currently very unfit and previous bike was a 10 gear drop handled racer 30 years ago.

Amongst the many considerations I'm seeing a lot of web chatter extolling the virtues of 1X single chain ring set ups with no front derailleur. Amongst the many virtues I'm loving the idea of a very simple set up with potentially far less maintenance and chances of chain drop. To say I'm not mechanically minded would be an understatement!

Your thoughts please. Not looking to spend more than £500 and appreciate that you usually get what you pay for and that 1X set ups tend to be on pricier bikes currently

I'm a bit out of the loop on bike buying, prices and new tech, so here's a couple of general pointers.
I'm sure someone with real world experiences will be along soon enough.

Typing 1x hybrid bike into Google bought up a pooh tonne of decent looking bikes around your price point.
Here's just 2 of the first ones I saw, to whet your appetite.

(I have no idea who cycle solutions are - that's coincidence not a recommendation)

- Get a bike you really like, even if it's over budget, you'll ride it more.
- Don't bother with front suspension.
- 1x is definitely a plus but don't discount conventional front gears, it'll take years for you to bugger them up.
- Save some money for locks, lights etc, best to buy a couple of differ styles of locks, as opposed to an expensive one.
- Cycle to Work scheme?
- Don't discount future proofing with some electric assistant.
- Get Fignon's Ponytail to make you one for about £200!!!!

I would say - go to Decathlon and get one of their Riverside hybrids for £200-500. Im looking at getting the e-version, but my mate at work has just got one of the standard models.

A VERY good bike for the price. 1x system, easy to maintain, solid build, and they look good too (also available as rigid fork & suspension fork models...see links below)

METALMICKY, don't rule out a gravel bike. Halfords and Decathlon do them at about your price range.

I'm probably being facetious.

Am I missing something but apparently the 900 is on offer at the moment and is cheaper than the 700 you've listed. All sizes available if colour isn't an issue.

Input please cycling geeks I am trying to put together a handicap bonus system for my latest Beat the Medallist cycling days, where as part of your afternoon with a GB Cycling Gold Medallist the plan is the more money you raise for your chosen good cause you get time off bonuses. I attach the latest times the last three GB Cyclists posted at Lee Valley Velo Park and looking at what time bonus we should give for every £100 raised...? And of course whether age of the riders should come into it?

I've got yet another 'gentleman's condition' to keep me off the bike. This time, its a suspected UTI. I've never had one before. Holy shit. Or maybe I should say, hell's piss.

More visuals from our last day...to illustrate the gap. See the time from the Team GB Athlete on the top. Again simple question is what bonuses should we give for every £100 raised through the donation pages set up and the proceeds of the event auction page? Making realistic but still an incentive to fundraise for chosen good causes.
