The Shadow rubbing his former tram manager's nose in it again. Textbook stage win.

Clocks change soon, so my ability to mix up my commutes returns. Bike booked in for service in anticipation. Its about time the weather improved.

Not sure if posted but both Italy and now Spain have banned recreational cycling.

Madness.

Lockdown means lockdown I guess. The thing is, why can't self isolation permit running, cycling and dog walking etc.

Blimey, really!? Surely cycling solo presents little or no risk of transmission. The one positive that I have forseen in having to self-isolate is getting out on my bike.

On my own.

I very much was planning the same. Weekends have been either miserable weather or busy for ages and it isn't quite bright enough for evening rides for another month. The only action my bike has seen in months is on the turbo.

My self isolation plan genuinely involved going out into the Yorkshire hills on my bike, on my own.

NYC is temporarily removing car lanes and turning them over to bikes, as so many New Yorkers are trying to keep out of the subway (tube!)

Afternoon far better cyclists than me. With all the kerfuffle going on at the moment and the killing of all fun I decided it maybe time to get the bike out again. There are cracks in the tyres (continental town things which minimise punctures) so can see the kevlar below. As such i presume it is time for new tyres; which I where I need some advice. I have a Norco Indie 2 hybrid which I primarly use on the road, but the occasional track is not unheard of, which has 700x37 tyres. I presume I could probably use 700x35s? as there seem to be more of those about.

Just looking at solid, puncture minimal comfortable tyres with decent grip. Thoughts appreciated.

I also really dislike my saddle, which is a replacement for the original which I also didn't like, but that's a whole different issue!

Cheers

Fairly new to biking and the crappy weather has stopped me for the last 2 months. Just had my first ride outside since Jan. Have been using the local gym but now thats closing for minimum 3 months.
Am now looking to get a smart trainer and wondering what everyone else uses.
Thanks in advance.

Yeah Moto is right, 35's would be absolutely fine.

TBH I wouldn't be at all surprised if the wheels/clearance could take anything from 30 to 45 (obviously not suggesting you try).

Conti road tyres are, in my opinion, prohibitively expensive with very little evidence of being VFM.

Assuming this is them, the same can't be said for your current hybrid tyre:-

Only my prejudice would having me looking elsewhere, that and maybe a smoother tread.
If you were happy I'd stick with what you know.

If you felt a little 'sluggish' them moving down a size or two might improve that a little, as might less tread.

Albion in the north - rollers. Cheaper and you get get a better core work out because you are subconsciously actively balancing. Also you have to 'work' harder than you think. Any longer than 15 minute stints, get special tyres.

Thanks. Not sure my wife will ever master rollers though! Shes frightened to get on a bike as it is but wants the ability to exercise. Id love to use them but assume they cant be paired with any of the apps. zwift etc?

Shame. Yes, but you can use your GPS and put speed, cadence and hrm sensors on.

I have been using an Elite Drivo on Zwift for about 2 years now. Being a total fair weather cyclist, the ability to simulate riding up Alps or racing a 10 mile time trial without leaving my house has been an absolute game changer for me. Fittest I've been for 20 years. To buy a decent trainer and the Zwift subscription is expensive though but they do hold their value quite well and cheaper then the spinning classes I used to do.

Also great at the moment when self isolating.

Under the (hopefully not misguided) belief that going for a cycle ride isn't a big no-no in this era of social distancing, to replace my usual commute, I went for a ride and found myself, for the first time ever, cycling along the preston park end of London road, and my god what the hell is going on with the cycle lanes along there?! Up on the wide pavement for a bit, back onto the road, back on the pavement when it's not particularly wide, on the pavement, but on the right, then suddenly switching to left side of the pavement, then rejoining the road right at a bus stop.

Crazy.

Vittoria Randonneurs! Cheap at only £10-15 each (available online at Decathlon etc) & absolutely bombproof. Not had a puncture in 3 winters I've ridden mine that I can remember- and no visible signs of wear yet either. They also have the puncture resistant layer in them and, while I ride 28's, I believe they do go up to 35 / 38's + as well. Well worth it.
