Albion captain Danny Cullip is wanted by Championship rivals Sheffield United.

The Blades are expected to make a bid for the 28-year-old centre half.

Cullip seems certain to leave to further his career after five years with the Seagulls, providing the clubs agree a fee.

Albion do not want him to go and are offering him a new deal. His contract expires at the end of the season, when he would be entitled to a free transfer.

Sheffield's interest in Cullip follows Albion midfielder Darren Currie's £250,000 move to Ipswich last Friday.

The cash-strapped Seagulls launched the Alive and Kicking Appeal in September to cover a £2 million shortfall.

The Appeal has raised around £250,000 and Albion will earn a similar amount from next month's FA Cup tie at Tottenham but, together with the fee for Currie, it still leaves a gaping hole in the finances.

Blades' boss Neil Warnock has targeted Cullip to plug a defence that threw away a two-goal lead in last Saturday's 2-2 draw at rock-bottom Rotherham, which was still enough to lift United into a play-off place.

Bracknell-born Cullip signed for Albion from Brentford for £50,000 in October 1999 after a month's loan.

The former Fulham and Oxford defender, a talismanic figure, has made 242 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Albion will today ask Steve Claridge to stay with them for another month.

Claridge's month-long contract expired with last Saturday's 2-0 defeat away to his old club Millwall.

The 38-year-old striker is keen to remain with the Seagulls for the rest of the season but manager Mark McGhee is reluctant to make such a commitment at this stage.

Albion's financial position is precarious and McGhee wants to adopt a wait-and-see policy with regard to Claridge.

The Seagulls have won two matches and lost three since he resumed his League career after a spell as player-manager of non-league Weymouth.

If Claridge agrees to stay he will be available for the next six Championship matches, starting with Friday's visit by Stoke but he is ineligible for the FA Cup third round tie at Tottenham on January 8 as he has already played in the competition for Weymouth.

Paul Watson plays in the Reserves against Peterborough at Worthing today (2pm) following his first appearance of the season at Millwall as a second half substitute.

McGhee said of the rightback, who returned recently from major back surgery: "I am trying to increase the size of my squad from within.

"We are going to need everybody over Christmas and the New Year, so I am just keeping them all involved."

Jake Robinson is involved in Albion's FA Youth Cup tie at Woking tomorrow night.

Good news that we're trying to keep him though... (DC, not SC)

If DC goes he goes there is nothing anyone can do about it, he has given us 5 years service, and we will get a resonable fee for him.

Lets look ahead we have youngsters to replace him.

What sort of fee do you think we will get? I wouldn't take anything less than £500,000 personally but I doubt we could hope for that.

i would be absolutely guttrd if danny goes. I know we have cover in that position but DC is the best we have & is the heart & soul of the club.

If he goes im guessing our hopes of staying up go with him

I disagree with that - I think that sometimes the so-called Mr Motivator types are resented by other players.

I would expect new leaders to emerge from the pack - particlularly the more intelligent players among the squad - Adam Virgo for example.

Totally agree. He is a great player but we have other players who will become as good as him. We have to look about securing the safety of the club financially and if selling Cullip is the way forward then so be it. We have to look at the bigger picture and not keep thinking about staying in this division and nothing else.

I'm fairly non-plused about Cullip going. He has been a great survant to our club but I would have been more pissed off if United had come in for one our younger startlets. ala Virgo or Hinsh.

I'm surprised SU aren't after someone like Hinshelwood.

They are clearly after a short term solution.

Cullip has been a great servant, and could have gone ages ago.

A sad day for the club but hopefully we'll get a decent fee for him. We have got decent young defenders who he must have influenced.

Good luck to him. :albion:
