Croatia was just revenge, Capello clueless.

The Croatia game was about pure player revenge.

Capello if he selects Lampard and Gerrard is showing us that the formation and team chosen away against Croatia was a forced hand and not the tactical genius that people are saying.

Even I after a couple of years of believing Gerrard and Lampard could play together now admit it dosent work.

the worrying thing is that against poor opposition we will get away with it and Capello will believe it works......

I'd play as close to the Croatia formation as possible, which means leaving headless chicken Gerrard out of the side and playing Downing I'm afraid.

Go in with Downing Barry Lampard Walcott

And Heskey and Rooney up top.

I think the fact that Joe Cole is injured and that it is a choice of Downing or Gerrard on the left is what has forced his hand for this game.

I'm sorry I don't think that's true at all. Are you seriously suggesting that an injury to one player is going to force his hand? What has forced his hand is the fact that he refused to pick the most on form left winger in the Premiership, Ashley Young.

Given what he's got though, I'd go with Chappers. But you can't blame the Cole injury on having to pick Downing; you can blame Capello.

Exactly. Without Cole in the side I think Capello would look even more clueless if either Gerrard or Lampard were on the bench.

The difficult decision re the two of them he will have to make at some point has been deferred for a while

Yes, I agree with this.

Not necessarily. Capello wants to get goals tomorrow and might not want to play a holding midfielder. In this case, Gerrard and Lampard might work. Against stronger opposition we know it doesn't.

From what I have read Barry and Lampard will play in the middle, with Gerrard on the left. The left of midfield has been an issue for England since the early 1990's and the minute Joe Cole is injured that issue appears again.

Nope for tommorow night i would go with Barry and Lampard.

Although i believe Gerrard has the edge over Lampard as a player, Lampard played great last time out and deserves to keep his place.

My only change would be if Cole is injured to bring in Downing i suppose.

Just makes it even more laughable to me that Ashley Young isnt in the squad.

As Ashley Young isn't in there I would swap Walcott to the left and put either SWP or Gerrard on the right.

As for Gerrard on the left.....even more of a joke

Bet Downing will be delighted....

sten super has called it.

Ashley Young on the left would have been the correct answer.

I'd play Doug Loft ahead of Downing.

This is the issue with Gerrard though. He is a better player than Lampard, but he is also more durable, hence he does get asked to play out of position, like Scholes before him.

I did read something interesting about giving him a run at right back, another problem position for England with the demise of Neville and the fact Richards seems to be viewed as a centre back and Bardsley has not kicked on like people thought he would.

Now your just trying to wind me up UB :lolol:
I can see it happening though, Capello deploys one of the top 3 midfielders to right back....

Surely no manager would be daft enough to deliberatly choose to keep playing people out of position?

Gerrard DID start out as a right back, though, so that one's not that far fetched.
