New cherry, seaming green top. Could do without a bowling attack finding its lengths early as well !

Have to say again what an amazing setting that is. I'd like to Tardis myself in with a nice glass of chilled fruity white. They do have rather good wines over there too.

Root gone. Great catch by Mitchell.
To a ball he could have left on lenth the ball is moving both way just leave the ones that arn't hitting the stumps . The runs will come soon enough why is Root playinfg a waist high ball thats going to miss. Sorry lads but in 40 mins its a differnet game you just hang on in there until sahy lunch. f***ing ameturish.

Quite.
Two dismissals to short balls (Root and Bethell).
Another bowled straight through the gate (I'd accept that Crawley got a good ball if it wasn't obvious that he should at least have had some pad in the way).

I won't mind if Pope or Brook get out to a wild hack while running down the pitch, which seems quite likely, because at least there's a clear intent to push the bowler of their length there.

Interesting stat fact. I don't think I saw a single lbw appeal in that session.

And 50 for Pope. :clap2:

Good knock, if less comical than Brook's, and therefore worse.

I do prefer him at 6 compared to 3. Not sure if he's actually been less frenetic at the start, if I notice it less because it seems more normal from a wicket keeper coming in at 4-down, or if it's just less apparent when Brook's regularly running down the pitch to launch the ball for 6 over cover at the other end.

280 all out. Will be interesting to see if that's a competitive score. It sounds like a lot of wickets were thrown away.

We scored 21 runs and lost 4 wickets in the space of 16 deliveries

Carse beauty to bowl Williamson - no ball - not sure about this because the replay showed he was a smidge behind the line when his foot landed, but the TV still they used to call a no ball was after his foot had slid forward an inch. Not that a commentator has mentioned this, but to me that's not a no ball.

In those conditions against that bowling, most England teams (actually most test teams full stop) that I've seen would probably have found themselves about 100-150 all out.
I'd be notably critical of Crawley and Root's dismissals. I would be of Brook's if he hadn't scored a genuinely special (and wildly entertaining) hundred before running himself out.

Whilst it was absolutely Brook to blame for the suicidal run out, I thought they ought to have been sharp enough, once it was clear they were in trouble, for Woakes to jog through and take one for the team. Brook's wicket was clearly far more valuable.

After some very indifferent efforts in the first Test (one proper worldie from Phillips aside), there were some really excellent catches in that first day's play.

Mitchell to remove Root was good. The diving one in the deep from O'Rouke to dismiss Carse. And the pick of them for me - Carse at (not very) short leg, diving forward to dismiss Ravindra. :clap2:

Just saw the highlights, I don't think there's anything behind the line when the heel touches down.
Really tight though.

That's from the TNT Sports highlights on YouTube, incidentally (at 8:13). There's one frame before that one which I think is just before he actually makes contact with the ground.

Is anyone joining me on the NSC sofa tonight ? You know you love to hear my Bob Willis style observations and my know-it-all analysis. I did get Bethell right, in fairness. I do miss Bob.

I’ll watch the first hour or so but need an earlier night tonight as the Fulham/Leicester sandwich l loves a good few disrupted nights😊

Might do but my ability to stay awake is not up to much beyond 10.

While I've got you, would I be right in thinking that you haven't changed your views on Brook as a result of his two cracking innings? FWIW, I think you were wrong then and has the potential to outscore Root in his career (I doubt he will but it wouldn't surprise me) because he's such a destructive batsman. I wouldn't say the two large (some might say match-winning) innings in NZ ought to prompt a re-evaluation: it was all there already and, despite the runs, he more than rode his luck.

Not sure how long I can last.

I've not noticed your Bob style, you read a lot more cheery. But that's not saying much.
