Crawley are hoping to sign Nicky Law in time for Saturday's Conference opener against Grimsby after making a £250,000 bid for the 22-year-old Rotherham midfielder.

Rotherham are considering Reds' offer for a player who made the League Two team of the year last season. After starting his career with Sheffield United Law had three separate loan spells with Bradford City before joining Rotherham in June 2009.

Crawley assistant manager Paul Raynor said: "He is a player we have liked for a long time and we're hoping he wants to be part of what we are trying to achieve here."

I think Law played a reserve game on trial for us when Micky Adams was looking at him during his Sheff Utd day's, probably via Bob Booker's links !!

Quite honestly, there is bugger all difference between the BSP and Div 2, so even if they do get promoted, financially it will make no difference what so ever.

Ill second that, all you have to do is look at where the teams that have come up have finished the following season in League 2

they seem to be gambling a lot on getting promoted........but what will getting promoted actually give them? i doubt their attendances (which is quite a big issue) will increase THAT much......i mean will people who stayed away for the likes of, i don't know, cambridge, suddenly turn up to watch them play torquay? plus things like wages will increase, i know f*** all about business but it all seems like an odd risk to make

But TV coverage is higher, hence should get more sponsors, and the average crowds in BSP last season were around 2K (lower if you exclude Oxfords and Luton's), in Div 2 it's nearly 4.

Plus also the league cup, Paint pot and rnd 1 of FA cup guaranteed.

Also as you say, if they win BSP, they would have a good chance of making play-off's of Div 2.....

As someone said the other day could it be a push to get league football to stop a possible loss of fans when Falmer opens?

Ask Accrington Stanley whether making it into the League made all that much difference.
Their chairman was bemoaning the lack of support from the town, financially they were screwed, and they were only bailed out last year by Burnley hosting a friendly and giving them all the proceeds.

I have no doubt, it will.... again......but I do see the logic of their approach.

I would also wonder where the cash is coming from. Average crowd was just over 1000 last season. Not enough to justify this kind of spending.

Accrington are quite an interesting barometer average attendence-wise:

2010: 1,980

Going by that, Crawley could expect an initial burst of interest, before settling back to around what they are currently getting in the BSQ, maybe a few hundred more.

Course there are a LOT of clubs in and around Lancashire, so Accrington are always going to be struggling in that respect. But then Crawley do have the dregs of south London to compete with as well. I don't think they'll get massively more through the gate if they make it into the League.
