Vaccine-resistant variant.
All it takes is people to go out and start spreading one of those and suddenly we're right back in the shitter. Indeed the current Indian variant is already concerning many as possibly being so, certainly to the AZ vaccine.

Bore off. We've been hearing from miserablists all year. Just bore off. The evidence behind vaccinated people not getting the virus in significant numbers and not needing hospital treatment are all positive news. The continued fall of case volume is positive news. Everything is positive, except a select band who want negative news and want to scream on about the doomsday predictions. Take your miserable views somewhere else, son.
Whilst I kind of agree with you, I see myself as a citizen of the world and therefore the bolded bit borders on offensive. Don't think I'm a miserabilist though.
If you’d rather stick your head in the sand I’m not stopping you. But reality isn’t all happy flappy, and trying to claim it is just makes you look a fool. This is still a hugely dangerous virus and the progress we’ve made is very, very reversible in the wrong circumstances.

Reality in life isn’t always, in your words happy flappy...but that doesn’t mean we don’t try to be positive and we are in a far better place than this time last year and indeed summer of last year ...somewhere along the line (soon) we have to try and continue with lifting restrictions and accept that with that their will be risk ..just as their is with most things in life...and that level of risk currently is quite low ...hopefully that will continue ..I’m not sure banging on about variants is that helpful to be frank. Yes be aware of them, but not to the point that they solely determine the way ahead
That and most of the population and their local town councils couldn’t organise a piss up in brewery. It was inevitable India was going to be hit hard. The whole fabric of the nation is basically chaos and a “yah sahee rahega” attitude to life.

Out of adversity, thanks to the genius of the global scientific community and an amazing NHS/Dept of Health vaccination programme, things in the UK are in a great place than as was and as could’ve been right now.
Israel and the UK are models for others to follow.
Being gloomy and pessimistic serves no purpose, other than to try and make people miserable.
Which must be frustrating for them given they manufacture a large proportion of world wide vaccines.

and population density is akin to an overcrowded ants nest.
Forgive me but I'd rather be pessimistic and make sure this thing works out than blindly optimistic and watch it all go pear-shaped.

I’m more in a middle ground. I wasn’t blindly optimistic in April/May 2020, but hoped.
Then the vaccines were created and approved in quick time, our old folk including my parents and the vulnerable got a form of protection and Covid metrics such as death rates plummeted. I’ve been into town a few times in the last couple of weeks, shops have started to do business again, outdoor cafes and pubs have custom, it was great to see people enjoying themselves again on the seafront and Palace Pier. I’m both relieved and optimistic.

Surely there is middle ground here - reduce the restrictions but remain observant to good practise - distance, masks and hand washing (certainly the latter). I think the "let's get back to December 2019 " approach is naive. To also disregard 'variants' is to ignore the truth of what will happen, the trick will be to stay away ahead of them. I, like many, am desperate to get back a more normal way of living but that does not mean to say i forget the last 16 months...

I guess they are just managing expectations and trying to encourage people to see the vaccine as just one of a package of measures, which seems prudent. Nobody ever said it was a silver bullet and I suppose as time goes on better data will be amassed regarding it's effectiveness over the medium term. Admittedly, I don't pay a huge amount of attention but I have sensed a view along the lines of 'vaccine = immunity' which was not the message I recall the scientists ever promoting.

I wasn't talking about Brazil or India. Two countries who have barely responded to the virus at all. India with their continued festivals, lack of restrictions and almost total easing of any preventative measures for months before the virus has hit them hard again. As was inevitable. Brazil aren't even worth talking about, the level of stupidity there is staggering.
In the UK the government have taken a lot of actions which haven't been popular, including with me at times. But as a country we've responded probably as well as we could have done (With a few fairly reasonable errors along the way) and now there is a positive outlook. It's not over until it's over worldwide, but our house is in order and that's all you can ask of the government.

Heartbreaking to see this, these actions would be deplorable in normal times but with social distancing regulations still in force it is disgraceful, absolutely right that all those involved should be banned for life.

Cheap booze and cheap tickets actively promoted to a large student cohort……….who could possibly have foreseen any problems with that ??
