Whoever said USA, I used to agree with you - but then I went, its awesome. I was in Chicago for a week and then took a mini road trip in rural Illinois, and just loved it, the people were great, so friendly and helpful the city vibrant, the countryside round the Illinois river beautiful, and the beer, oh the beer is to die for, whoever says they don't do good beer in the states is an idiot, so much more variety than we get back here. I wanna go back.

And you saw NO culture in any of those cities?

Could you list a couple of countries you've been to where you've found some culture?
I'm just surprised is all, I've been to a similar number of cities as you and found rich and varied culture in all of them with the exception of NYC (not including Brooklyn).

Can I turn this on its head a bit.
2 countries that I have visited often and do not like returning to.
1. Greece (particularly the islands)
Because I wish I could live there, I love the culture, people, way of life, food (not the wine) weather etc, I often think I should have been Greek.

2. Sweden a great country with mostly very intelligent nice people, again wish I could live there, I loved Stockholm, weather is a bit cold and miserable even compared to UK but they do the long dark cold winters very nicely. Also they have very beautiful women that I am no longer able to get involved with, which saddens me.
I am jealous of both countries and do not like visiting as I know I have to go home.

Personally I prefer European city breaks . The majority of the above mentioned were for work so arguably I didn't have too much time to experience the culture (hold my hands up) but things like duck/ bus tours in these cities I have found very boring and not too much to see . With of course a couple of exceptions

I never said that , perhaps culture-less was unfair and nevertheless this thread was about countries you wouldn't want to visit and seeing as I've visited them it's not really applicable anyway . I just feel Europe has a lot more to offer and is more varied than the US

The US is a great place to visit. People are generally friendly especially away from the obvious tourist spots. I love New York it has the energy of a great global city, but even better was traveling through Georgia and the Carolina's people were so friendly. Would also recommend India. In fact get out there leave your prejudices at home and explore the world.

I've been to 22 American States, including 6 this summer. Wonderful place, with amazing scenery including some stunning National Parks, and friendly people.

There is more to the USA than NYC and Orlando.

Sure, there are parts of certain cities I wouldn't go to, and I abhor their gun laws but if you get off the beaten track it's great place to visit.

The simple solution to your dilemma is to move. With some imagination you can maybe make it work.

That is a quality post, on all fronts.

Although I quite like Greek wine.

I'd like to visit North Korea just to see what it is really like (or at least as far as your official tour guide will let you see). You can go there with specialist tour agency's. Best not to ask too many difficult questions whilst there though!

One country I would not miss again from my travels is Saudi Arabia. Depressing place in so many ways.

The only place in Saudi I have had the 'pleasure' of visiting was a month in Riyadh for work: a shithole of a place.

Tenerife was (and probably still is) a total dump. I went for a birthday getaway with my old man, we got chased out of a pub by English morons and bottles thrown at us because I refused to punch one of their drunk mates in the head while he was passed out.
The whole place stunk of vomit, and I mean on the streets, not just the skanky pubs, plus we got hit by a hurricane while we were there. Apparently it did loads of damage but I couldn't tell.

Latvia, although Riga is a beautiful city, the people there are the most miserable I've ever had the displeasure of being around. I also ended up extremely unwell as I contracted Hepatitis A while I was there. I attended a Euro qualifier while I was there between Latvia and Northern Ireland, the Irish fans ended up on the receiving end of quite a nasty kicking by the Latvian Police. I heard one cop, as he battered a guy with a baton, say "I told you not to walk on the grass!".

Russia - freezing cold and not exactly friendly to folk like me, so I think I'll pass.

I feel sorry for them having such a large chip on their shoulder. Really hope the World Cup in 2018 is a disaster with very low visitors.

Not heard too many good things about South Africa but I expect some cities are nice. In fact the whole of Africa doesn't appeal. My sister's boyfriend ended up in hospital through food poisoning in Tunisia.

Seconded, and in very similar circumstances. The people I worked directly with (locals) were nice enough. Apart from that :

Weather - shite. Stupidly hot.
City - some flashy buildings but no soul
Entertainment - almost non-existent. Life seems to revolve around markets, shopping malls and driving out to tents in the desert to smoke sheesha whilst watching footy on TV (OK as a one-off but no more really). I gave the public executions a miss.
General atmosphere - tense and oppressive
Booze - none, obviously
Women - largely invisible obviously
Food - meh

One of the few places I have been to that I have no great desire to go back to - doesn't compare at all with the likes of the US, Mexico or Brazil for example, or even Dubai. At least there is is stuff to do in Dubai and you can easily get a cold beer.

Cape Town is lovely. Johannesburg is unsafe, with awful traffic - good steaks and wine, which is just as well as if you're there you're not going to stray very far. Significant number of arrogant, old-school white locals who are openly hostile to blacks - horrible to witness (I had one serious incident in my team there a few years ago)

I have travelled all over the US and I find the idea different cities have a similar feel totally and utterly ludicrous. NYC the same as LA? New Orleans the same as Dallas? You have also contradicted yourself; tipping and Americans "being over the top" is part of their culture. Culture goes beyond a few Mexican artefacts.

I wonder how you'd feel if they took your passport and made you help build a stadium.

People are very selective about human rights issues though.

We're happy to stick their oil (and that of the other Gulf states) in our cars, we're happy to buy phones, computers and televisions made in sweatshops in China. We're happy to travel to the US despite their drone killings of thousands in the Middle East, death row incarceration and so on.

Because it's football related and there is bad blood over the World Cup bid, people seem to apply a different set of rules.

Having spoken to some people there, it is an embarrassment, and things are moving forwards, albeit at a much slower pace than we would all like to see.
