Countries you would never wish to visit?

What a horrible, judgemental thread. How anyone can judge a country from what they see on the news and in the media is beside me. If that was the case, all Americans would think we actualy go round the place drinking tea all the time wearing our bowler hats.

Just because a country has a lot of crime/poverty does not make it a place you shouldn't want to visit. Open your eyes, broaden your horizons. A few years ago I had the chance to work in the slums in Nairobi, Kenya and was one, if not the, greatest experience of my life. Would go back there in a heartbeat. Yes, the food wasn't great and yes, it smelt awful, and yes, the poverty is beyond dreadful and something which in the 21st century should have been sorted out, but the people and the expereicne was 2nd to none.

I once knew a nurse who worked in Saudi for a year. Another friend was considering teaching English there for a year. The nurse told him, 'Don't even fly over the place'. I've always remembered that piece of advice.

North Korea is an interesting one. Must be fascinating/bizarre to see it. But I really wouldn't like to be there at the wrong time. Nor would I try and nick a flag for a souvenir.

Edit: Southern Spain is out as well. Northern Spain would be fine though.

Some amazing places in southern Spain, just avoid the places where all the english people go.

Spent 2 years in Saudi working. The Arabian Desert is amazing. Climate not humid except by the coasts. People friendly. Spent 2 weeks holiday camping and driving around the place. Sand dunes, oases, scuba diving in untouristy Red Sea, mountain walking, dry gorges, waterfalls springing to life after one heavy rainstorm. Plus lots of nurses certainly go there!

I'm afraid another vote not to go to Saudi. Despite your rather nice description of the place I couldn't bring myself to overcome the brutal political system in place - public beheadings etc.

Excluding the obvious war zones the only other place I have absolutely no intention of visiting is Iceland.

India is humanity. One of the best things as a human being you can do in travel is to spend time in India, by far the most wonderful country on the planet. Puts our little enclave into perspective.

The place is such a varied and mad place, but having to give way to an elephant on the motorway sums the place up.

This thread is very much like the countries I like to visit! Got the ferry to Iceland with our campervan this time last year and had a brilliant month driving around and camping in the middle of nowhere every night.

Is that not the point of this thread though? To judge, to be judgmental about a country you wouldn't want to visit? The clue is in the title.
Most countries are obviously large enough to have bad areas and good areas, awful sights and beautiful ones. Just some have more of one than the other. Everyone knows this I guarantee it, it's just a bit of fun.
My wouldn't want to visit is Iran, yes I've been there, yes I'm sure it has many beautiful areas, but I just didn't like it and don't fancy going back.

For me the decision is based on personal safety...... you certainly can get into strife anywhere ... wrong time wrong place etc... but your chances are ramped up enormously in an Islamic nation.... so all of them are on my banned list.

myself and a friend are thinking about a trip and he suggested just this, i thought he was barking mad but he is serious,i really dont mind the campervan idea but is it feasible?

Whoever said USA, I used to agree with you - but then I went, its awesome. I was in Chicago for a week and then took a mini road trip in rural Illinois, and just loved it, the people were great, so friendly and helpful the city vibrant, the countryside round the Illinois river beautiful, and the beer, oh the beer is to die for, whoever says they don't do good beer in the states is an idiot, so much more variety than we get back here. I wanna go back.
