You don't think it might inhibit a gay couple leaving the match from holding hands ???

I actually don't care if it does. Any couple leaving the stadium, gay or straight, holding hands are a pain in the axxe, get in the way, stop others getting around them etc etc.

Ha. Nice work Police, way to make yourselves look like lazy, racism and homophobia apologists. Nice to see Brighton fans coming off as whingy little Wendy's again. Especially compared to the far more severe, racist bile being meted out to others. Tragic.

TBF, he wasnt given a fair chance to speak as the 'journalist' kept interupting him and would not let him speak.

Was the other way round actually. Copper kept trying to talk over him when he was asking a legit question.

Okay, I,m gonna say it, had enough of being too polite to some people, I'm coming out..........as someone who is fed up to the back teeth of the whinging middle class new breed of football fans.

I aim this at those who are offended by ever so slightly risque football songs, those who are willing to report fellow fans for swearing, those who argue that banter is such a rubbish terminology, those who think that football needs to change to suit them, those who refuse to believe that gay friends of mine laugh at how precocious Brighton fans must be getting offended at opposition songs, and especially those who say that they are considering staying away unless football changes its ways.

Stay away, go, don't bother coming back. Those that remain will have a truly more football experience for it, passion, excitement, noise, colour, tears and joy. those that object to this should go watch snooker, take their kids to the gymkana, and on Saturday afternoon perhaps go to the cinema.

There, said it, and don't expect an apology.

I've seen the police walk the length of Queens road on the march for England next to skinheads giving the Nazi salute to foreign looking folks passing by and did absolutely nothing. They did stop, search and take all my details for filming it on my phone though so they weren't totally apathetic that day.

Have you thought you might be better off at home watching ID and Green Street?

If someone is being physically or verbally abused then it needs sorting. If someone who doesn't know me, comes from miles away and is situated at the other end of a football stadium from says he can see my holding a man's had or that I'm a bumder I really can't say I'd expect anyone to do owt about it for me. Odd what folks will let ruin their day.

Don't disagree with that in general but a couple of minor points:

Firstly (and it may be to do with where I sit in WSU) I don't actually notice too many of these types. There's a mix of working and middle class fans up there to be sure because of the differences in pricing between middle and wings but most of the faces up there are long time fans from the Goldstone or Withdean. No one recoils in horror at these songs. In general they seem to be ignored.

Secondly there are limits. I don't think for a second, for example, that Auschwitz songs or monkey chants are acceptable (or Munich songs for that matter when playing Man U). The thing is these chants are largely self policing, certainly they are at the Albion. People will tell the perpetrators to shut up or even laugh at them. What we have here are people who want to promote their media / policing /political careers and draw the line for us in order to do so. They've drawn it too far to the left.

Far too easy to be offended and play some sort of race/homophobic card now.

Have you thought you might be better off at home watching ID and Green Street?

Have you ever thought you might be better off at hockey ? I'm serious, football hasn't suddenly morphed into an activity that (mostly) working class blokes go to watch after a few beers and use industrial language, its always been like that, if you don't like it, don't go.

I don't really think there are that many Albion supporters 'who are offended by ever so slightly risque football songs'. The problem lies with the hateful shit that gets spouted by a minority of cretinous individuals who take it upon themselves to threaten & intimidate folk who are just reasonably going about their business on a match day. Perhaps if the Police concentrated on acting when these incidents take place, we could all just get on with the type of day at the football that the overwhelming majority of supporters want to experience?

No it hasn't , and no-one's saying it that will change. All people have an issue with is genuinely homophobic or racist chanting. It's not really a football issue, it's a legal issue.

"I don't think for a second, for example . . . . . . monkey chants are acceptable"

Why not if you believe that homophobic chants such as the ones mentioned are acceptable?

Forty years ago racist type chants were accepted as being banter and actually in most cases didn't actually reflect the majority's attitude towards the ethnic minorities - since then society's attitude in general has changed and quite rightly such behaviour is abhorred by most decent fans.

Of course there were some amongst those behaving in that manner who were racist in the same way that I am sure that amongst fans who engage in homophobic 'banter' there are some also truly reflecting their beliefs.

It is acceptable by many to call out things like, "get up you poof", to an injured player but would never dream of calling out, "get up you ******". In reality the only difference between the two is that one word is no longer generally acceptable as an insult whilst for many the latter still is.

Making excuses for those behaving in a homophobic manner is only delaying the time which will, I have no doubt, eventually arrive when throwing such insults will be considered generally unacceptable.

Because monkey chants were aimed at individual black players. These chants are aimed at a group of fans who have heard it all before and in general don't think being called gay is an insult. Do you?

As for 'get up you poof' if you read all my posts you'd see I thought that attacks on individual fans and players is exactly what should be being tackled. Again though you'd have to be fairly sure the player being barracked was gay for it to actually be the same as a monkey chant, i.e. a deliberate attack on what he can't help being as opposed to a phrase they learnt at school and repeated after a few pints. Honestly, if that's illegal we might as well give up now. Wouldn't you prefer the police were catching murderers and rapists instead of spending their time sorting out twitter fights and who sang what?

So by your reasoning shouting out something like, "you're behaving like a ******" would be acceptable ???

The person the insult was aimed at may be white and there certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of about whatever your skin colour may be.

No - it's the word itself that is unacceptable because of the connatations attached to its use - likewise the cry, "get up you poof" is every bit as insulting irrespective of the individual's sexual orientation.
