Contact Lenses

Tried gas-perms in my early 20s and was nearly put off for life. Constant discomfort, forever getting stuff behind them etc. Got a bit of grit behind one of them once while turning right on my bike at the top of Tottenham Court Road, and both eyes snapped shut and refused to open. Had to stop in the middle of the junction with Oxford Street, and it was nearly the end of me.

Took nearly 20 years before I could face trying again. Went for daily disposables and have never looked back. Forgot they were there about five seconds after putting them in.

Would not recommend keeping them in any longer than they are designed for, though. Over the years, this is likely to deprive the cells of oxygen. For the same reason, it's best not to use dailies every day, particuarly if you put them in in the morning and only take them out last thing at night.

I wear a contact lens in one eye, the only problems I get are when I'm tired and/or suffering from hayfever, which can make it uncomfortable as your eyes dry out.

I have monthly disposable soft ones with some kind of high oxygen thing about them. It won't kill you to fall asleep with them in, but when you wake up (even if you only close your eyes for an hour or so) it's like they're glued to your eyeballs, and you have to blink loads before you can actually remove them without detatching your corneas

Incidentally, I get mine from Vision Direct, who did me 90 pairs of Focus Dailies for £55 a couple of months ago, which is even cheaper than the site recommended earlier in the thread, though they do tend to take four or five days to arrive.

Thanks for all your replies.

I've just go back from the Opticians again, so they could show me how to take them out and put them back in, I was in there for 1 hr 15mins!! Felt like I was never going to get the hang of it...

1. Dont leave them in overnight unless drunk.
2. Try GetLenses online. As others have said you need a prescription, but much cheaper.
3. Try different sorts. Perservered with one lot for about a year. Never properly comfortable/difficult to keep in. Now have Focus Dailies and work a treat every time. Apparently different daily disposables work differently depending upon your eyeball shape. So, if yours arent feeling comfortable, ask to try a different make.

Good luck.

I have worn monthly disposables for about 15 years now.. they are great when you get used to them....
I made a mistake once.. I went on a short notice overnight fishing trip with a mate.. by 4 AM my eyes were killing me !.. got in at about 6.30 AM to realise I had worn them for 23 1/2 hours... I was so pleased to take them out

Isn't that for short-sighted (the one where you cannot see close, or have I got that the wrong way round?) eyesight though?

I tried contacts once! In the optician I tried them on then and was amazed felt great. Then read the instructions. Next I came to with blood on the table and smashed glass!
My brain must have got confused and I passed out smashing a glass tumbler. The optician still sold me them saying "You'll get used to them" I never tried them again, tempted with laser surgery but a bit scared !
