Community club of the year - any press picked this up?

Abort, retry, fail
Very true, but it would be nice for the Albion in the Community team to get the recognition they deserve, from the nationals. Particularly when football has such a poor reputation on this sort of front.

But it's not like any of us took notice of who won this award last year is it?

The head of the community team is a fella called Steve Ford.

Back in the late 80s I played for a team of Albion supporters, which included Steve, and also the current club photographer Bennett Dean. We trained at the old church next to the Goldstone - it was all boarded out inside as a 5-a-side pitch. Justin Fashanu used to coach us!

Anyhow, one night after training, we went to the Hove Park Tavern for a couple, and somebody had brought along their Swedish exchange student, a young blonde stunner, called Cecilia.

Whilst everyone was pretty impressed with Cecilia, Steve was slightly more impressed than most, and made a big tent in the front of his tracksuit trousers, which said stunner noticed and laughed at.

From then on poor Steve was universally referred to as 'Stiffy Ford'.

Maybe he still is.

Hmmm maybe it's because no one out of the Argus readership really gives a toss?

I certainly wouldn't have cared if <insert some other team here> had won it.

But the story here is FAR better than just AN OTHER lower league team winning an award.

The associated LDC innuendos and slurs that make it more newsworthy.

We've had some tremendous stories in the nationals over the years from Albion fans like Paul Hayward and Nick Szczepanik.

All we seem to see these days are NIMBY news stories :nono:

Come on Ruth Kelly - see the facts for yourself and GIVE US FALMER!

I think LDC (who, aided and abetted by friendly editors, have previously pissed all over us in the external PR battle) HAVE actually made a mistake which could be exploited.

It's not so much winning the award which is the story - it's LDC's sniffy response. LDC have finally, for the first time, publically admitted that they oppose the club per se, not just the stadium at Falmer. No not in as many words but the usual form for these type of awards is for Councils, MPs etc to say something like they're 'delighted' - even if they in fact don't give a toss. Either that or you get 'no one from LDC was available for comment'. For them to break the convention in such an obvious way means that their antipathy for football is finally out in the open.

I've just watched the awards on Sky 1.

I suspect the reason for the delay in getting this story the wide publicity it deserves is simply that the media aren't treating the story as something that has happened until AFTER the ceremony has been broadcast on TV.

And what an appropriate way to mark Jean Baudrillard's recent death. :lolol:

I haven't seen LDC's response, what exactly did they say?

Something on the lines of "It means nothing. Brighton F.C.'s benefit to the community is too small to be of any real significance."

Soccernight are doing a piece on this tonight.

It was great, quite a good outlet for DK and the club, and underlined things about so-called alternatives, NIMBYs, Lewes and the park-and-ride objections they *USE* to object (they really are total pratts!), the dosh spent on inquiries (just to the club), and the big line from a carefully frustrated Dick Knight along the lines of "how is it a big European City like ours can be denied an available sports facility!?"

EXACTLY, and concisely and economically put across DESPITE the YEARS of convoluted arguments bombarded upon him to bleat otherwise.
It is OUTRAGEOUS!

Well presented (on the whole), and apart from getting into more intense detail - it was as good a show as we could ask for. In fact, if BHA's points had been longer or more detailed it might have been lost on some viewers.

FULL MARKS for that show, I hope it got a LOT of viewers, and that it can be retained for further broadcast when we need to re-present those points again.

Thankyou, once more, Dick Knight, for keeping the flag held high. I look forward to your riding high on your horse into Falmer Stadium.

Nationals have politely declined. I thought it would prove to be a nice contrast, when comparing to Premiership clubs and their TV windfalls... Oh well!

not being churlish, but if you are a Mirror reader in Liverpool, what would you rather read about....Chelski signing another billion pound player, or some little seaside town football club getting an award for teaching kids in their community how to kick a football.

Sometimes we do have to get our situation in perspective
