If they live here I can't see why they shouldn't be able to vote

Because residency and nationality are two totally different things, why the f*** should some aussie who is going home in two years have a say on the future of how this country is run ?You are so f***ing wet its not funny, it's a cliche but the germans really would have been goosestepping down whitehall if people like you had been in the majority in 1939.

I thought it started with the nick nacks being able to vote here and not severing the links with the emerald isle too drastically, until they flounced off completely.

yet more tedious British paternalistic patronising of its former subjects, just dressed up differently, like 'multi-culturalism'. The empire was the WORST thing to ever happen to this country.

It's not a cliche, it's just a sign your opinion and argument is complete bollacks if you have to unnecessarily bring in the Nazis

I agree with Bushy here (makes a change). If you are not a resident of this country then what happens here has sod all to do with you. It's was your choice to live overseas for whatever reason (unless you are in a foriegn prison).

Sorry , for once I have to disagree with you. I am an english citizen born and bred in the UK but live abroad. My family still lives in the UK and my children are british citizens who will almost certainly return to the UK at some time in the future, as will I. therefore which governemt is in power is totally relevant to me and I should have a say in it. That's what being a CITIZEN means. Whetehr I choose to vote is another matter.

Well I think that people who live abroad do so because they choose to and unless they pay tax here they have no right to an opinion. As far as people who work here and pay tax then yes, I think they have a right to an opinion.

It doesnt state you have to 'work and pay taxes here ' just have ' leave to remain' ,but i digress , i do not think foreigners should have a say in who forms our government, end of story. In fact the aussie who brought this to my attention is variously bemused and pissing himself laughing at the situation, his actual words were ' what is the matter with you cnuts? doesnt it bother you that foreigners have got an equal say to you who is governing YOUR country ?

It says resident here:

or an Irish, qualifying Commonwealth or European Union citizen who is resident in the UK.

Personally I don't think people who are just resident here have the right to vote. However if you can prove you are resident here and in employment then I think you should be able to vote.
