Really, very few goalies cold kick a ball 20 yards to the side ?

People get the wrong end of the stick with this kicking business. Of course, any pro keeper can larrup the ball up to the halfway line. It's not really about that part of the process. What many can't do is receive a ball at their feet comfortably from any angle/height in the same way that an outfield player can and that's where Ankegren is good. The defenders know they can knock the ball back to him and that, even under pressure from an oncoming player and with the ball coming in from either side, he is good enough to control it and play the pass/long ball. He had one dodgy kick last night.. a left footer which was a particularly difficult one, but even then he got some distance rather than falling over his own feet or panicking.

Regardless, more concerning than the goal was the couple of crosses he totally flapped at including one he dropped. Eventually one of those will fall at a strikers feet and that will cost us. Can't say I'm overly confident about him dealing with a potentail aerial bombardment from West Ham next week

Genuine question? How many goals have we actually conceded from Casper 'dropping' the ball top an opponent? He clearly isn't the most comfortable on catching crosses but some of the time he's accused of flapping, he actually pats the ball down and then collects it. In a way it's a better safe than sorry approach as he's actually in control of the situation. Unconventional but I'm not sure it's really cost us goals very often, if at all - suggesting that he knows what he's doing.

I agree we'll struggle against any team that puts us under pressure in the air but that't not all down to Ankegren. It's a fairly obvious weakness when we only have 2 tall players + a couple of others (like Barnes) who are decent in the air.

I didn't go last night, so taking every one else's views it seems he played well.......... However, I have seen the goal on TV (several times) and there is no doubt he should have saved it. He got both hands to the ball but bascially failed to stop it, I am sure he will be very diappointed that it went in.

As a goalkeeper I'm afraid it is not the saves you make, but the ones you let in that are analysed.

Goalkeeping wise, his technique is lacking, generally his angles are wrong (see Liverpool, Palace), he is not dominant on crosses, he is not athletic in terms of diving (little in the way of actual spring - See Ipswich, Palace), decision making is questionable (see Leeds).

Despite all of the above, he is quite brave and his distribution remains probably the best in the division and that can be the only reason why Gus has not purchased anyone else. He also made a couple of crucial saves versus Hull, was up sharpish to deny Portsmouth with the rebound following the penalty, good last minute save versus Bristol City.

Incidentally he remains the best keeper we have on our books and despite the above concerns I would be pleased to see him play well and error free for the rest of the season.

Admittedley I don't think it is actually any with the exception of that Rochdale debacle

The main difference is that last season he never came off his line to collect crosses because he very rarely had to. And when he did, the difference between League One and Championship is such that if he did make a meal out of it, then it very rarely cost us as players were slower to react. This season we are under far more pressure which means he has to relieve the pressure on the defence by dealing with the aerial threat. He very nealy didn't get away with it last night and against Liverpool he got bailed out when another poor attempt at gathering saw somebody (CMS?) having to clear off the line

At this level those sorts of mistakes will cost us simply because of the differing standard in much the same way that giving players too much room will see you punished in a way you never were in the league below (last nights goal for example). Leeds realised that and got rid when they won promotion. We don't seem to have done and thankfully we seem to be getting away with it so far, but if people are getting on Ankergren's back when he is conceding fine strikes last night and it is 50-50 that he should be doing better with it I hate to think of the reaction when a truly game costing and blatant error does occur

We need new defence and Keeper now, or we face relegation. FACT.Wake up Gus.

How many goals has our FIRST CHOICE defence conceded in how many games? Thats all 5 of Ankergren, Calderon, Painter, Dunk, Greer?

To be fair, Ankergren is one of our most consistent players.

He's consistently shit.

Got criticised for this comment in October after Ankergren virtually threw the f***ing ball into the goal vs. Millwall. But here we are at the of December and nothing has changed. If anything, things are getting worse.

It's been painfully obvious since the beginning of the season that Ankergren simply isn't up to it in this division. If he isn't replaced soon then it's going to be a long, bleak winter.

Its not Just ankregan who is to blame for once im going to critisise gus ,it is very clear that all three keepers are not up to it at this level casper is a league 1 standard bez is league 2 and poke rymans at best ,then i look at tony godden watching him warm up the keepers he is unfit slow and can hardly serve the ball with power and direction required at championship level .I all so quetion his coaching ability should be working with ankregan 24 7 to catch crosses and be more vocaly comanding if they can not do this then get someone in that can and this goes right through the club from acadamy level development squad and first team ,the keeper coaching is not good enough at all levels right through the club and needs sorting now .

ees complicated no?

How is it clear? Casper is the only one we've seen play at this level. We saw brezovan play v teams from this level in the FA cup last year (two wins, one clean sheet with fringe players featuring). Poke hasn't been near the first team since northampton last year.

new manager bring in previous yes men & not liking those in place already...sign of weakness, happens in all forms of business..Kuipers was/is better than those we now have & should still be 1 of 2/3, age is lower relative to Henry,Giggs etc & the more experienced managers are willing to run with it, even if it gets a bit of flak

have see poke play several times and the guy lacks one basic keeping skill he cant f***ing catch if brezavan was up to it then gus would not have got harper in and he would of played instead . im a keeper coach and have played in goal and in my opinion they are not good enough at this level . fine if you disagree but i say what i see
