Coldplay's New Album

The odd thing I find / found about Coldplay is unlike some other bands (where the opposite is true) their music improves with repeat listening. I wasn't overly fussed with Violet Hill when it first came out (it seemed a real mess of styles), but now I really like it...

I have to admit I like a lot of their stuff (I am 40 this year), and will get the new album. Nowhere near as good as Muse (current faves) but still good.

Papa

P.S. I'm guessing that Muse aren't cool to like either so, please pick me up for that :D

That's what it is, it's music for people that don't like music.

If they really did like music they'd find something MUCH more interesting to listen to than f***ing Coldplay.

Exactly. Same bracket at The Feeling, James Blunt and rock bands like Nickleback etc.

Music for people who are not really into music but like listening to Radio 1 and buying Now Thats What I Call Music albums...

You could EASILY say the same thing about most of Paul Weller's solo work, but you LOVE that, no?

Yep. I'd agree 100%, the Modfather's stuff since Stanley Road is just lazy, boring stuff. As is anything by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers since God knows when. Or Neil Young since the 70s or anything Paul McCartney has released since the Beatles. Or (IMHO) any of Oasis albums after the first.

I have come to realise that there are so many people on NSC that are just so much more sophisticated / clever / insightful than me... I am but an insignificant nothing when compared to some of the brilliant people on here...

it seems many dont like them simply because they are mainstream and because at some point in time it became trendy to knock Chris Martin. i imagine he rubbed some reporter up the wrong way and they initiated a campaign against him in the cool press. dont know how else this happens, it seems random to me who is considered cool/anti-cool.

i quite like coldplay. put on parachutes recently and it really is rather good and rush of blood has a couple of great tracks. however, on hearing the first single off this new album, im not rushing to by it. past their best.

It's not only Chris Martin's music that makes me HATE on them, it's the fact that he's forever banging on about saving the planet and how shareholers are evil and then goes on tour and uses his private jet to fly home every night (when in America) whilst the rest of the band slum it on the buses whilst forgetting that without shareholders and the like his band wouldn't have a record label to put out his piss poor wishy washy attempts at music anyway.

What a BLEND.

(I bet he's actually an alright bloke though, just comes across as an utter tool).

It became trendy to knock Chris Martin whe it became obvious what a pretensious, self important and pompus SPOON he is.

and he's different to most successful people in the music industry in what way?

Anyway, it was never my intention to get into a heated debate about Coldplay - I quite like their music, amongst a whole load of bands. They are not my one and only love

exactly. its seems the music media dont like him because hes better at being pretensious and self important than they are and many followers of music follow that theme. then on the other hand you have the BBC DJ who want to collectively suck his cock, which is going to far the other way. he just this guy, you know?

others are hypocritical and get away with it, only the other day talking about Jamiroquai moving from Emergency on Planet earth to one of the largest collections of sports cars. anyway, we've highlighted the issue perfectly, its just down to personality. the anti Chris Martin feeling transfers to Coldplay, dont like him so they must be shit.

Look at this, he massively contradicts himself within the space of a few words...

Touted as one of 2008's hottest commodities, Coldplay is playing it cool.
"On the last record, we got caught up in things we didn't enjoy, like people talking about share prices and investors," singer Chris Martin says. "We got very big but felt a little lost.

"This time, we were hungry to disassociate ourselves from anything other than improving someone's holiday or bath time."

On Tuesday, the British quartet releases fourth album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends amid huge marketplace expectations, especially from label EMI. The company is desperate for a blockbuster after its takeover last year by a private equity group resulted in layoffs and financial strain.

Arguably the heir apparent to U2, the band has sold 30 million albums since 2000 debut Parachutes. Their last, 2005's X&Y, held Billboard's No. 1 spot for three weeks straight and eventually sold 10 million copies worldwide, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Today, Coldplay is turning a cold shoulder to revenue pressures.

"I want people to keep their jobs," Martin says, "but our primary consideration has to be the 16-year-olds who are going to listen to it and not the shareholders who are never going to listen to it."
Rejecting hard-sell tactics, Coldplay enticed fans with freebies: the single Violet Hill at Coldplay.com (2 million downloads in a week), streaming the full album at iheartmusic.com and concerts Monday in London, Tuesday in Barcelona and June 23 in New York.

Tickets are selling fast for the Viva La Vida tour, which was set to launch this weekend, but has been pushed back to July 14 because of production delays. "We're still asking people to buy our record, but we're putting as much free stuff out there as possible," Martin says. "It's like the shopping channel that gives you a trampoline for buying a running machine. We wanted to say thanks."

I love clutching at straws to discredit shitty musicians.

And anyway, do shareholsers not listen to music? Too busy swimming in money I suupose, or flying around on private jets. Oh.

You don't like them, do you. I get that sort of vibe from your posts.
