Coldean/Moulscoomb parking issues

I bet a few of those parking in Coldean/Moulscoomb are coming from the west. Coming from Worthing the only realistic P&R is Mithras house as Mill Road fills up very quickly. This means you have to almost drive past the stadium to get to the P&R car park which kind of defeats the object in my book. A larger P&R to the west would help this a lot but I'll be honest and say I don't know where it would go.

Rubbish. Permission for the stadium was given on the basis of demonstrating a sustainable transport policy without adding to existing congestion in East Brighton.

Why do you need to drive to the ground, rather than utilise the other modes of transport available. I don't drive and I haven't had a problem getting to or from the ground.

that's cos i am right on this one.

Sorry but you don't need a car to get to the Amex. I live ten miles away from the stadium and work fifty miles away yet I get to the ground in good time by using the available public transport. My brother is a STH and lives in Newbury - he doesn't drive to Falmer and still makes evening games.

There are plenty of ways to get to the stadium in good time that do not require a car

but the problem is you never see the other persons point of view...you are so..."i'm ok therefore it must be right" ( in fact I think you posted that in an earlier attempt on this thread)

It is not a very pleasant trait

I would like a system that incorporates everyone and car drivers are not the devils spawn. I think being prepared to park up and have a 4 mile round walk to see the match is not being unreasonable.

No, leave him alone, the bloke's a genius. He can put himself in the position of every one of the other 22,500 fans and tell them what works best for them, their journey, their lifestyle, their Saturday routine, their family, their kids, their work etc. A real visionary whose goal in life is to see a bus queue of more than five miles.

I shall be calling him JACK68 from now on.

I don't see how this is enforced though: if it's done formally through resident permits, how are you going to stop people? Put barriers across The Avenue? Hillside? Moulsecoomb Way? Coldean Lane? That would inconvenience a lot of people and who's going to staff these, you're talking about a lot of stewards here.
Surely they'd just give permits to people who live there and give parking tickets to people who park there without a permit, like in central Brighton?

You think that's bad? Try driving from the east where you DO have to drive past the stadium to get to ANY of the park and rides.

One of the other interesting problems for consideration is that as part of the existing planning permission all car users lucky enough to park at the University or at the Stadium have to leave the A27 a junction early (rather than turning off at the Stadium junction) and drive all the way through Coldean further adding to the traffic congestion. The net result is the A27 is blocked from the A23 junction because the traffic from the slip road backs up onto the motorway. I suspect this may get changed if we get planning permission to increase the capacity as it just doesn't work or help!!

The park and ride is still far worse a deal for anyone coming from west or north/A23, unless you are able to get to Mill Road a good hour and a quarter before kick off to guarentee a space. That must be the focus for future expansion of the p&r.

I would be tempted to bring in residents only parking on match days/evenings to remove any legal ambiguity.

Saying that, I suspect many would just park a bit further away, moving the problem.

One of the real benefits of maintaining a one-way traffic flow through the Sussex University campus is that it makes it possible for the accessible minibus service to take disabled supporters from their car park direct to the stadium (and back) without getting caught up in traffic congestion on the campus. Change that and the convenience of the service will collapse.

It's a minor point, I know. But - as we have seen - disabled supporters very easily get forgotten in planning the details of the access arrangements. This particular solution is working well. Don't change it.

I come from Ashington so have to drive. I currently park back up the hill from The Hiker's Rest in one of the residential roads, along with hundreds of others. It's a 26min walk and I don't mind the exercise, but wouldn't want to walk any further than this. My ideal Park and Ride would be somewhere on the North side of the A27 near the A23 turn-off.

Part of the problem with the car issue was that from day one it was like a dirty word. The club were trying to persuade people to try alternatives if at all possible (fairly successful), but didn't really deal with questions and concerns from people who always knew they might have to drive, at least sometimes, and didn't want to pay £15. It wasn't properly addressed.

For example, how many people NOW a) drive to or near the stadium at the moment, or b) possibly would, but use the car to somewhere else and then use buses/coaches/trains to get in?

This is purely my guess based on my experiences this season, but I would put the number that drive to either the stadium car parks, Coldean/M-coomb, or the park and rides at around 3,500. Maybe another 1,500 or more drive to H Heath/Wivelsfield/Lewes/Worthing etc and get another form of transport, but might drive all the way if it was easier.

That's a lot of people using cars still, and it is madness to dismiss them. The argument 'just get in earlier and leave later' is unrealistic. Many people already use about six hours to go to the football. Making that eight hours or more isn't really an option in family life.

Incidentally a large park and ride north of the A27/A23 junction would be a very good idea if it could be obtained, both for home and away fans.

Because at the time it was a dirty word.

We had to demonstrate that building the stadium would not result in local communities being over-run by car drivers (falmer residents seemed very concerned at the time and quite rightly so) reslting in increased pollution, congestion, illegal parking etc etc etc. and that the private car was not the immediate default answer to any of the transport issues that would arise.
