How many investors do you think are prepared to stick in half a billion quid of their personal wealth with absolutely no guarantee of ever seeing any of it ever again? The fact that 15 years later we've only paid him back £30 million of it, suggests either he isn't a very shrewd investor, or that your 'no-brainer' suggestion is rather idiotic.

So which is it?
Ever noticed how TB players come and go, normally at a spectacular profit sooner rather than later, and that profit gets immediately ploughed into ever-expanding bricks n mortar infrastructure. TB don't want 'paying back' he's doing pretty well out of the deal thank you very much. Dont be fooled by the bobble hat is all I'm saying

How is TB "doing pretty well out of the deal" by reinvesting any profit back into the club's infrastructure?

FFS. DK could not deliver....so Bloom stepped in. He did not 'do a number' on him at all. I know little to nothing about DK but does he really hate Bloom for stepping in, saving the day, and getting us to where we currently are? If this is the case, then it's an odd way to support the club.
DK never got the chance to deliver. The global financial crisis of 2008 saw to that. So DK had zero choice other than to succumb to a shrewdie investor able to write a cheque for £80m out of petty cash.

Sorry, but I just find this new found fashion for sneering at Dick 'Tight' utterly distasteful

It depends what we assume his motivation is. In my opinion, his motivation seems to be that he wants to build the football club into a real, sustainable powerhouse. By not paying himself back, he's investing huge sums into the core infrastructure of the club which builds wealth in the football club. If he continues to be able to have the club invest in itself over the next decade then we'll be at the very top of the football pyramid and if that's his goal then I imagine he will feel that he is doing incredibly well.

Not all wealth is financial.

Yes I'm sure he has some dastardly plan for world domination, and if it hadn't been for his evil then the Albion would be top of the Premier League with an 86 year old Dick Knight in charge.

Maybe we'll read all about it in his book one day, and he can see if he can make himself any more unlikeable than DK came across in his, with his nauseating 'Everyone thought this, but then I came in and did the opposite and saved the day' on repeat throughout every single chapter.

Nobody I know is sneering at Dick Knight. In fact, I've never seen it on here because quite frankly anybody who did that is not a Brighton fan.

But while we're on the subject of distasteful, I personally found it distasteful that the question was often asked of his administration where the money was coming from for the stadium, and all we got was nose tapping from those in the know. Quite frankly, Bloom's presence did Knight a massive favour in that regard, because it was quite clear that the money wasn't there.

Wow. That's DK's saving the club thoroughly dissed by an arrogant ignorant prat then :lolol:

Yes exactly...and yet the OP is making that out to be some sort of bad thing?!

Tony Bloom was always going to invest in the club but wanted to make sure planning permission was secured. He didn’t want it known it was his money keeping it going at the time. Yes, the money was going to be borrowed but with a safety net.
DK kept Ray Bloom on the board after Archer’s departure.

Where TB & DK fell out, was that Dick wanted a seat on the board, whereas TB wanted his own men. Unfortunately that caused bad feelings.

No. It’s an arrogant prat dissing an awful book. It doesn’t change what he did for the club. Dick Knight is, and always will be, an absolute Albion legend.

I can’t honestly believe I am the only person who found that book thoroughly nauseating, surely? It took me three attempts to read the whole thing over about five years. The way he praises himself for every success we had, and blames everybody else for every failure, I found tough reading. It was classic ‘never meet your heroes’ vibe.

Blackburn?? Have we ever sold out an away end at Blackburn? When Spanish Dave scored a equalising penalty with the last kick of the game there were only 110 of us there...
109 by the time we scored.

I left deep into stoppage time that night, just as Blackburn were taking what I assumed would be the GK where the ref blows for full time. I ran back to my car to beat the traffic on a freezing cold night and had been on the motorway a good 20-30 mins before hearing that we’d got an equaliser

I stayed to the bitter end! It took about 30 minutes with the car heater blasting out to feel my feet!

I know these are the times when we should be loving every minute of this “ journey” but I miss those days! When we all knew each other at way games…no bullshit about getting tickets ( or just turning up to get in POTG) NSC/ Mailing list had very few entitled wankers on it and arranging what pubs to meet up in, which to avoid, where to get the best pies…halcyon days bumping along in the lower reaches of the leagues with the added jeopardy of whether we would survive another year.

Such a cold night. I walked from the station, and it was like something out of Lowry. Crossing the Leeds/Liverpool Canal along a cobbled streets with people coming out of the terraced houses all walking towards the ground - which was lit up in the bowl below. One of those 'football nights' that stick in the memory forever, sort of summed up what we all love about football and the whole event around the match.

Good point to be fair, although the club is now worth £500m according to some sources.

I’m not suggesting there were no reasons for not being able to deliver, but deliver he could not. Personally I’m not “sneering”, DK saved the club, TB took it to another level. If DK hates Bloom for this, as you suggest, then it says a lot about DK’s ego.

Tell that to our “ new” fans, and they wouldn’t have a clue
