I think you'll find Scandinavian countries are sharing caring and civilised. Thank **** the game wasn't at the Riverside. He'd be cold n stiff in the back of a Bedford CF van before it started up, let alone got anywhere near people capable of calling 999!

Yes, British SOciety does need reordering. A total flip would be a good start

Er, wtf?

Is this something the C/E could have felt coming on before it actually happening or is this a total out of the blue situation ?

I have posted an explanation a bit earlier in this thread

No, he probably wouldn't be 'cold and stiff' - I'm sure the Middlesbrough paramedics are as well trained and dedicated as wonderful paramedics are everywhere else. Unnecessary bit of anti-northern prejudice. The fans may - or may not - be racist; but the paramedics? Call them out as racist or incompetent and proclaim to the world your own prejudice.

I expect you just didn't express yourself the way you meant, eh?

This.

The protocols will be in place at all top flight stadia.

Disagree....having had to watch my (42 yo) sister literally waste away for something like 3 months with terminal cancer, a swift exit (ideally dong something you enjoy) is infinitely preferable IMO.

Lightning hitting my fishing rod would be my preference

I teach this stuff. Many years ago, when I put my key lecture together I mentioned that although a cardiac arrhythmia may be the most common causes of death, one goes from alive and well to unconscious very quickly (10 seconds). If not defibrillated that's it. As a way to go it would be my choice. I used to add that 'when I'm 120 and in bed with a couple of fit young women' but after this quip went down very badly with my (mainly female and somewhat non-laddy) audience I dropped it.

Stevan Nolan is not the man to be hosting tonight's programme as he is adding mud to an opaque bucked of layman tomfoolery. Sometimes radio 5 is a worry. Never heard so much bollocks in my life. Some idiot suggesting a coronary artery event. No, FFS Shut up!

Fair point, well made. :clap2: that was never my opinion.

I'll stand my ground on Bedford CF's though. The MoD had Bedford trucks in service until very recently . . . .

You must be a right pain in the arse at Scrabble.

Me: “Dog. Five points.”
HWT: “Oh, I was waiting for that D. Catecholamaine-depended ventricular tachycardia. Triple word score”

Catecholamine. FFS.

Always remember my old dad, who played non league many, many years ago telling me he was in a game where one of the opposition had a heart attack and died.

Just shocking how it can happen to an elite athlete though. Shows it can happen to anyone.

My friend and colleague had a cardiac arrest / heart attack during one of our regular Wednesday night matches a few years back - fit as a fiddle, fell runner, footballer, just under 50. Despite half-a-team full of first aiders, he went down so quickly and so heavily - there was unfortunately no way back for him. You simply would never have had an inkling that he had any sort of heart problem / irregularity - so, yes, can happen to anyone.

It was the first time his son had played with us, who was just behind him on the right wing - so the only consolation for us all was how proud my mate was when he went.

That's very interesting and without doubt a noble and selfless life's pursuit.

Is this a first line emergency drug for use where VF is evident, or regularly taken medication to reduce occurrence in a risk group? Either way if approved it will be lifesaving for some I'm sure.

For my own understanding, are you saying there is a sub type of VF caused specifically by the cardiac irritability secondary to ischaemia? Is this the irreversible post infarct type of myocardial ischaemia or the transient ischaemia secondary to acute coronary syndrome? In my naivety I'm assuming ACS as this leads to the more labile arrhythmias??

Is there big pharma sponsorship for your R&D?

We have made an ischaemia-activated prodrug. It is inert. If you pretreat at-risk patients it will convert to an active antiarrhythmic locally in the ischaemic region where it causes ischaemia-dependent rate-dependent local conduction block, and VF is nipped in the bud. We (me and my pals) have a patent and will be looking for funding to go into humans. The story is very long. A famous cardiologists who rejected my application for funding (BHF) whose initials are AG, called the proposal 'counter intuitive and perverse - it would be better to prevent ischaemia'. Politics and madness (I happen to know a lot about this character, and sadly he had the call on my grant proposal). But I soldier on. PM me and I'll post more details if you're interested. Once our paper is published things will move. Unfortunately we have had it rejected without peer review by 6 journals, plus one that told us that 'ischaemia-induced VF is a very niche population' FFS.

Regarding your last point, Jennifer Adgey, Ronnie Campbell, Desmond Julian and others showed that when we get acute myocardial ischaemia we are are at extreme risk of VF in the following 30 minutes. Animal data supports this. Clinicians (electrophysiologists) see almost none of this because people die outside of hospital. In Faversham it would take 30 minutes for an ambulance to drive to my house, before they had a chance to decide stroke vs AMI vs indigestion. I'd be long dead.

So electrophysiologists do not think ischaemia-induced VF is important. Heart failure is their thing because that's what they see.

I could go on about William Ostler.....

To reassure casual readers none of his is relevant to Mr Eriksson. He did not have acute myocardial infarction. I'd bet lots of money on this.

Sanjay Sharma (on radio 5) thinks Eriksson's VF may be related to covid. Give me strength

Better tell Durlston this in case he's still indignant that his £10 stake on Erikson being the tournament's top scorer has gone down the shitter. This might be a way for him to recover his loss.

I think I know what you mean but I don’t think your wife * and kids * would be so joyous (* if applicable)

I think your point is valid for a young person. I was thinking if I reach my 70's, 80's and beyond, then those other issues are largely irrelevant.

Had it been at the Riverside the same protocols would doubtless have been in place at a major tournament like this. I would assume at football pitch in a UEFA championship is one of the best places to suffer in this way, if ever there could be a 'best place'.

The UK isn't all bad, yer know.

You are doing brilliant work here HWT , all very interesting . . . and impressive.

Also impressive is that you have just beaten your consecutive post record for not mentioning your ignore list. :lolol:

Erikson sounds like he is on the mend.

If Durlston gets his tenner back then I think we can be somewhat thankful.

Naive of zefarelly to think that Scandinavian countries don't have issues of their own, too. Denmark's attitude to immigration, for example!

Tough day. Hope so much he’s ok and can play again as unlikely as that looks right now. I always struggle when that sort of thing happens to footballers, massive credit to the medics.

That Russia Belgium game was quite a hollow watch.

Yeah, it wasn't an easy watch. I find that too, just considering how fit and healthy professional athletes are. When something like this happens it's a reminder that life is bloody fragile!

Reading the reports quite glad I didn't watch the game. Great to hear CE is stable.
