This. The outcry from ‘neutral’ fans at the time was vitriolic - along the lines of ‘we should be grateful for what we have’.

Chris did a great job for us but I think had reached the limit of where he could take us.

It think it was simply what it was. The owner had to stick or twist. He is an odds specialist. None of us own a retrospectroscope. And at the end of the day it doesn't matter whether we think the owner was right or wrong. Given where we are today it seems churlish to ponder the issue. And I will always love CH and wish him the best. That's all there is to say, surely?

I never thought CH was a negative manager. We definitely were not boring in the championship and I think in each season in the premier league at the start he would start playing more expansive football, but when that kept resulting in loses, we reverted to a low block, try not losing first, team.

I really hope he comes back to the Amex in some capacity, so we can give him the reception and thanks he deserved. Absolute legend,

Hughton is one of the best manager's we've ever had.

Circumstances meant that Tony was spot on with his decision, but Chrissy gave us some unforgettable moments, I wish him nothing but success for the rest of his career, and i'll take full part in giving him a rapturous reception if he ever comes back to the Amex

I'm not sure about that. At home maybe. But away from home Hughton was very cautious. I well remember when we were riding high in the championship and went to bottom club Burton. We say in for 8- minutes before giving it a go and winning 1-0. The week before or after Newcastle went there and demolished them 4-1. It was his standard approach and it is rose tinted glasses to say anything else.

I said a few weeks ago If I remember it was with JW in the studio where he said Potter didn’t really make an improvement on what he had done for a couple of a seasons. Guess you must of missed that one. Can’t believe you searched for it though

Well obviously he didn’t say it although you got the vibe, then you wouldn’t be overly nice to the man who took your job would you.

But Hughton gets it. He's been in football long enough. He's done nothing than show Brighton respect in his interviews in the last 5 years.

You don't know what Hughton would have done if he had the squad that Potter was given - but that is neither here nor there - it worked out well for the club and continues to do so.

Delighted for Hughton - he deserves to have the opportunity to have a team at a major tournament - and it should be noted that Hughton is not playing the defensive game that he was forced to employ with Brighton for the first couple of years in the PL>

It was a strange game yesterday. Ghana only played in fits and starts when they needed to up the tempo they did and when the went behind they quickly started to put pressure on CAR. Chris was saying pitches are really bumpy and that's a bit of a leveller. Also he said glad he doesn't have to play in that temperature

Fairly standard win in the end especially with 5 or 6 players who pulled out through injury. Kudus is going to be a massive success in England. I didn't really see it before but he is much better than I thought he was. Really difficult to out muscle him when he is on the ball despite the fact he doesn't look as strong.

The young lad that plays for them who's at Red Star Belgrade is gonna be a star and playing in one of the top leagues within a couple of years. Although he tired yesterday in the heat

I had managed to block out the majority of the first two years of PL away performances until this post reminded meGoing to any of the ‘big 6’ felt like such a waste of time. Still, needs must and all that.

Yea - international football is a lot more about man-management - you have the players that you have and you cannot change it by transfers. The objective is to get the best out of them.

I presume he still spends most of his time in Europe given that all the players play in European leagues.

Yeh a lot of time in Europe but a lot more time in Ghana than I thought he would do. I think Ghanaian FA would like to see some players breaking into the squad from the local Leagues so he makes sure he gets a look at them. But at the end of the day. Those players are still in the local Leagues for a reason and the others play abroad for a reason. And that reason is usually
because they are better players. So matter how much anyone wants local players to be involved. You have to pick your best players to give yourself any chance of success.

Yes I’ll go with that. Probably already been said: he had a great track record in the Championship and getting teams into the premier ( which was why Bloom recruited him); he’s one of just 2 managers in our history to get us into the top division - club legend for doing that and keeping us there. But, as others have said, some of the away performances were very negative, mustering just a couple of shots in some matches ( eg Chelsea and Spurs). I could never see him taking us to where we are now and I never dreamt that we’d be where we are now. I was happy to be in the top division and struggling to stay there because I didn’t honestly think we had the resources to achieve more. I’m delighted to have been proved wrong. The last 2 managerial appointments have taken us to another level, but CH should always be revered for what he achieved - in the same way the Mullery is. His Forest stint aside he’s got a good track record….and he’s a nice bloke.

That's so true. You could end up having 6 really good footballers at your disposal but if all 6 are mid fielders that's not any good. It leaves weaknesses in other areas which you can't solve in the transfer market
