Based on the list above of previous managers, no individual over the last ten years has made it to 60 games in charge.

That's less than one and a half seasons in length before they get the knife out.

But to be fair - Hughton did have 56 games or something, and a win rate of 25%. There was no sign of improvement

Surely he is universally revered by Albion fans? I mean actual Albion fans who go to actual Albion games.

It doesn't matter who online trolls or Palace in disguise think.

Surely nobody who watched us play under him would have a bad word to say about him?

Jan 2015 to Easter 2017 was as good as anything I've seen, matching my days as a supporter under Taylor then Mullery.

Sidwell's 50 yard goal, Dunk's improbable winner at Craven Cottage, spanking Derby/Norwich/Leeds, endless wins and goals, the double save from :wanker: Forestieri then an unlikely winner, Knockaert and Bruno destroying everyone, the return of Murray, that brilliant centre midfield.

The bloke who made it all tick .... Chris Hughton.

Steve Cooper odds-on favourite, Chris Wilder just behind. Both would appear to be decent appointments, but then again, Hughton did as well. Doubt either would be tempted, so further back you have the inspiring list of: Alex Neil, John Terry, Paul Clement, Dancing Al and Chris Coleman.

I reckon it'll be Alex Neil, sacked by Feb.

All too predictable, and sad for Chris who was clearly one of the best managers in our history during his initial run to the PL and our first season in this division. He's not fashionable I guess, but he did a wonderful job with us and conducted himself with dignity throughout his time and departure.

He's a great coach and his track record in the Championship suggests this is an exception rather than the rule, and thus I'm guessing this is more about the club and a 'poor' team ethic that Chris just couldn't turn round. He can and will be able to point to his time with us, Newcastle and Norwich where (yes) he had a support from above, but in our case we were an absolute shambles when he arrived and undoubtedly heading for the drop, yes we were that bad. Sure it took time, it took patience but when he delivered BOY he delivered.

He'll be remembered as an absolutely pivotal part of our rise, but unlike Gus, he'll be remembered as a great man too and that's a rare combination.

He'll be back, I suspect - it's his life and at the right club he'll create more success.

As for Forest, a shambolic mess off the pitch and a shadow of the club they were and could be.

Love Chrissy Hughton, doesn't matter a jot to me what he does now at other clubs, it wouldn't ever change what he did for us. A legend amongst the managers of BHA in my lifetime, amongst Lloyd, Brady, Gritt, Adams, McGhee, Slade, Poyet. Potter still unproven but getting there. Not necessarily all due to their good management or results or success but because of the emotional connection you won't understand and may probably ridicule.

ps - Hughton was rightly dismissed by Bloom, as were others on the list above. All managers have a shelf life.
Totally agree - well said.

Never forgotten for his success with the Albion but lost his way at the end and Forest clearly not a good fit. Today has been inevitable for a while. Should probably have happened in the summer

Like with Forest, Chris came in and pulled us clear from the relegation zone but it is there the similarities end. Contrast the rebuilding jobs in the summer transfer windows that followed:

FOREST 2021: In - 5 loans, only 5 permanent signings (Horvath, Drager, Ojeda, Silva, Healy - WHO?).

ALBION 2015: In - 0 loans, 13 permanent signings (including Hemed, Zamora, Rosenior, Bong, Maenpaa, Zamora, Hunemeier, Murphy, Goldson - £5 million for the lot).

And look at the players each team lost in terms of quality and experience:

FOREST: Sammy Ameobi, Michael Dawson, Michael Hefele, Glenn Murray, Yuri Ribeiro, Tyler Blackett, Harry Arter, Luke Freeman, Cyrus Christie, Cafu, Knockaert, Krovinovic.

ALBION: Shamir Fenelon, Paddy McCourt, Craig Mackail-Smith, Jeffrey Monakana, Chris O'Grady, Jake Forster-Caskey, Adam Chicksen, Rohan Ince, Elvis Manu.

The moral of the story is if you are not prepared to back your manager then don't expect him to achieve much.

From what I’ve read he’s better off out of that current shitshow of a club. Guaranteed a massive cheer if and when he ever rocks up at the Amex - unlikely we’d be where we are now without him having played a significant part.

I told a Forest fan at work what to expect - turgid whilst he keeps you up and then all depends on how happy he is with the squad he gets. Seems to have two settings - very defensive trying to nick games or the level of football we had for two years in the Championship. If he doesn't think he has a squad capable of going up then he won't go attacking like he did with us -he will revert to the way we played under him in the PL. All his previous times in the Championship, he seemed to be allowed to have a squad he was happy with and stormed the division. I can only assume he didn't get what he wanted and this is where it all ended.

No one has backed their manager. The Championship clubs bought players for an estimated £40m this season, less than £2m per club. In the 2015/16 season, Championship clubs spent £185m, more than £7m per club. The reality in the Championship right now is that you cant have anything you point at.

Managers capable of doing the best with what they got are having success. Those who need 13 new signings are not having any success.

Obviously the quality of "what they got" plays a huge part. In Nottinghams case they have a squad that should finish mid-table squad though people here like to pretend otherwise. Out of the teams Nottingham lost to so far this season only Bournemouth got equal or more players that have previously shown that they are capable of performing at Championship level or higher.

You are correct that spending is way down but it is noticeable how a number of clubs have cut big earners to keep star players and supplemented their squads with 2 or 3 shrewd acquisitions. Forest have trimmed without bringing in new quality. Look at the rest:

Fulham: IN - Gazzanigga, Harry Wilson, Chalobah. Kept: Mitrovic, Cordova-Reid
WBA: IN - Alex Mowatt, Reach, Matt Clarke, Molumby. Kept: Johnstone, Diangana
Bournemouth: IN - Gary Cahill, Ryan Christie, Jamal Lowe, Marcondes. Kept: Brooks, Billing, Lerma.
Stoke: IN - Ostigard, Sawyers, Sima, Vrancic, Sam Surridge.

I don't agree that Forest have a mid-table squad. Middlesbrough ARE a mid-table squad and totally turned them over last night at The City Ground.

I saw a stat online that said he'd won something like 120+ games and only lost 50-odd over his time in the Championship at Newcastle, Brum and Albion. Oh, and reached the playoffs twice and got promoted twice in four and a half seasons. To me that says the problem is Nottingham Forest FC rather than Chris Hughton.

Its not all just about money spent - The big expensive Loanees who propped the team up last season like Christie and Knockhaert had been departed. In total 13 players had left the Club and he had been promised they would be replaced. Up until 5pm on 31st August no one had been signed apart from a reserve goalkeeper. Between 5pm and 11pm about 8 other players signed. None of whom had been the original transfer targets earlier in the transfer window.

So whilst I agree, not many Clubs spent a lot of money in the transfer window - Forests' spending in those last 5 hours of the Transfer window was like watching an episode of ''Bargain Hunt'' where the contestants had to spend what money they had on any old tat just to make it look to their fans like they had tried to sign someone in that window

I imagine it is never nice to be sacked as a football manager, but CH is now out of that calamity club and it is no longer his problem.

The people who sacked him are still there and it is still them who have the problem.

Not even Nottingham fans doubts his ability to exit the Championship.

That has to go down as one of our greatest ever windows for both ‘ins’ and ‘outs’, replacing Fenelon, McCourt, Mackail-Smith, Monakana, O'Grady, Forster-Caskey, Chicksen, Ince, Manu with Hemed, Zamora, Rosenior, Bong, Maenpaa, Hunemeier, Murphy, Goldson. Although even then we didn’t manage to sign two Zamoras as you had it :)

There's a risk of over-simplifying the situation here, and looking for some sort of binary solution, focusing on one factor behind NFFC's struggles, and discounting the other as irrelevant - yes, Forest are a bit of a shambles behind the scenes at the moment, and the squad is hardly stellar (even at Championship standard) - but the players aren't *that* bad, and the idea that absolutely no-one could get substantially more out of them than Hughton has this season is very, very, dubious.

IMO, like.

I'd back them to stay up on the balance of probabilities; making up for their aberration of a start won't be easy, but a gap of 4 points between them and 21st isn't mammoth (especially given that the spectre of a points deduction looms over :sheep:Wayne Rooney's Derby County™:sheep:) - they're certainly not doomed.

It'll be interesting to see where (if anywhere) Chris goes next - he might be a decent fit for Ireland if/when Stephen Kenny gets the boot; restoring the team he represented as a player to some degree of respectability would be a fitting way to finish off his career.
