Depending on how far you are travelling, I find that if you go to the train operators site directly, you usually get the best deal. I travel a lot from Sussex to South Yorkshire to see family and if I book the London to Sheffield or Doncaster portion of the journey directly with East Coast or Grand Central trains, I get get both my other half and I up and back in first class for the same price it costs us to get us both there and back to Kings Cross!

Id go with Redspottedhanky myself - think you can still use Clubcard points on tickets from them too. If not them then whichever train company you would be using.

Wouldnt use thetrainline myself because of the fees they add on.

NEVER EVER use thetrainline. They are guaranteed to be more expensive as they add a booking fee to fares that are available at every other site. Use the train companies sites as they will have the best fares for their trains almost always and no added fees.

I used to work for thetrainline and they basically run the con that you think they are doing you a deal.

Agree. Trainline is a joke. I have plenty of examples of mates using Trainline and me using the operators website and getting a cheaper price. Ticketing is a f***ing joke though.

Like others have said go direct to the train companies website. For example I went to the Isle of Wight from Eastbourne last month. 2 adults, 5 children including the ferry. Cost £65 return for all of us.

Very very rarely use the train as driving is more convenient and usually a cheaper option but out of interest, given the plethora of service providers how do you find out who is offering a service to your chosen destination?

I went to Victoria yesterday, with a return ticket booked through Southern, in advance for £10. Also tickets sent to my home with no fee. Excellent service!

go onto any ticket buying site, put in your journey and part of the info provided is the service provider for each leg.

Thanks. Obvious I guess but just when did getting a train become such a complex operation?
I'm told we have the most expensive but least efficient train service in europe and if just booking a ticket (nearly said seat but you're not guaranteed one of those are you) is this difficult I think I will stick to polluting the atmosphere by car :(

Red Spotted Hanky uses the same search server as East Coast and a few others, so you're no more likely to get the cheapest ticket from there than the individual company sites, but it is sometimes worth doing for the loyalty points scheme it has. Thetrainline is good for planning your entire journey and working out which company websites you'll need to go to to get the cheapest tickets for each part.

Also, megabus.com does trains between certain locations. London-Sheffield is one of them (I got two tickets for the Barnsley game for a fiver). Nottingham from London is usually £7 and Birmingham is usually £3 with them. They also do the West Coast line between Edinburgh/Glasgow and Preston/Crewe/Brum. You have to have a bit of luck on the day you choose, but they do Scotland-Preston and Birmingham for £3-£10. They also do really cheap trains to the south-west - Exeter is a fiver from London.

God I really am amazingly dull
