I'd drop Elphick and try Virgo there. Elphick is not playing well. If Virgo fails there then sell Virgo when the window opens and get in a decent centre back. Then we need two fit full backs. Slade? Only to go if someone as good as Coppell wants the job. After that a midfield that closes down the other side quicker. They are ok on the ball but go AWOL from time to time.

In some ways I would love to see Coppell back here (and also Peter Taylor, who's also currently out of a job) - but ultimately the 'never go back' rule over-rides any such notions. I think we should stick with RS, for now anyway - bottom four at Christmas, though, might mean a change of heart.

What we really need is an ex Premiership player (the position doesn't really matter) who wants to extend his playing days for another season or two - and doesn't expect Prem wages! Someone who can bring the knowledge and Nous of playing at a higher level, and use it to improve the players around him. Like Butters, for example.

I know trying that with Robbie Savage didn't work out (and neither did Sol Canpbell at Notts County!), and also that most Prem players are so frigging rich they don't want to put in the effort - but if we could find one, someone getting towards their sell-by date at the top level, that would make a hell of a difference.

Nicky Butt or one of the Neville brothers, perhaps? - someone like that, anyway.

I hear Robbie Fowler wants the job at Tranmere player/manager!!!!!......On a serious note(although the Fowler thing is true).Who would be the equivalent of an Alan Mullary appointment back in the seventies today????Teddy Sherringham....or Shearer???

as long as they have a brain. Just because they can play it doesn't mean they knoww anything about the game or have the ability to coach / communicate. Especially British / Irish footballers. Steve Claridge a classic example, duno if you have ever listened to him? The worst thing is that he actually thinks he knows better than the punter and he is a plank thick as a brick! Fergie, the special one and Wenger. Not Players. OK Clough and Shankly were. But Shankly was quite a well read bloke as is Coppell. But many a footballer have not used their brain in their life so they are a bit out of practice!

Sheringham or Shearer? - no, they've both retired from playing and I'm talking about bringing in someone to play, not to be the manager. If they wanted to work on their caoching badges too, and maybe have a coaching role somewhere in out Yoof set-up to develop their coaching skills, that would be fine.

Fair enough - good point. It isn't going to be easy to find someone to fit the bill - I was a bit disappointed we didn't try for Ivan Campo when he was released (by Hull?) last season - he could have passed on a fair bit of acquired footballing wisdom, and done a fair job in front of the back four.

I do like Steve Claridge though - wouldn't want him as a manager (and he wasn't a great success as a player with us either, was he?) - but he seems to me to be a good bloke, and I don't think he's half as thick as you think he is!

We need a Hammond-esque player someone to pull the strings, dictate the tempo. Crofts just doesn't offer that. Get Jim back in a left back and stick Muzza up top alongside Fozzy.

You mean a bit like Dennis Wise done at Millwall......ok how about Didi Hammann, would fill the midfield slot perfectly and is German so sure to be very efficient in his methods.

Well, so long as it's anybody but Dennis Wise! Where is Hammann these days, anyway?

Very few brilliant footballers turn out to be brilliant managers. How many cups/medals etc did Redknapp (H), Wenger or Ferguson win as a player.
How many championships did Bobby Charlton win as a manager. Or Liam Brady (in England), John Barnes, Nobby Stiles, Tony Adams
Lists are endless

Dennis Wise is at Chalfont St Peter in the Spartan South Midlands league now so is hopefully out of commission

We need a creative midfielder desperately, because this is where we have gone wrong all these years because we've never replaced Chippy. We also need a experienced head in the back four, somebody like Danny Cullip a strong physical leader.

100% agree, although good a player as Chippy was, he was a poor mans Simon Rodger(Palace i know), and Cullip was no Igamarrson or Blackwell, all the calibre of player, only a manager with the right conections and respect in the game could attract, to a team playing at a athlectics stadium, all be it temporary now!!!!!
