Nobody’s mentioned what happens if you lose/drop your contactless card.

Lose cash and you know how much you’ve lost - lose a contactless card and you could well end up supplying drinks to a lot of people before you realise you’ve lost it - banks will only refund sales made from the time you report the card missing.

Not entirely true...

Most decent banks would take confirmation of a number of failed PIN attempts as viable proof you weren’t in possession of the card at the time of the transactions and therefore refund.

Also the contactless accrual amounts[amount before a PIN confirmation is required to confirm ownership] are being reduced from c£200 to c£120 as banks were being stung for higher refund amounts as thieves went on a scratch card/pre-pay card buying sprees.

Getting the drinks served quickly is a much bigger problem than the paying for them once served. Most people in 1901 pay by card already

Nope, not true. You tell the bank, they cancel it.

I think (could be slightly out of date) you could be technically held liable for the first £50 spent on contactless BEFORE you report it, but in reality most banks won't enforce this and will refund everything fraudulently spent. Only thing to note is cards can continue to be used some time after cancellation, so you need to keep an eye on your statements for any rogue entries that appear for some time after.

So, lose your card and you might get a bit of hassle but you'll almost certainly get all your money back. Lose your cash and it's gone.

I know the arguments about the old, poor and disadvantaged not being able to adapt or learn to budget, but systems can be put in place, apps used etc and this outways the money lost via theft, cashing up time and mistakes..........

....and of course, all the old, poor and disadvantaged who can't, won't or don't have cards, or who can't adapt to the modern electronic world - yeh, they'll al have Apps on their smart phones, won't they!

Cash is not free to the shop that has to process it all. Cashless could bring prices down in the long run....

Why do you think cash isn’t free? Because the banks penalise small businesses for paying in cash, excessively so IMO, in favour of steering their customer bases down their often limited digital offerings and so the businesses all go down this route...

It’s a negative feedback loop of their own making [and I work for one of the fokkers]!

Don’t get me wrong I’m pro technology but only when it has been robustly tested and has contingency systems in place. The Visa outage was a prime example of an effective monopoly and ineffective contingency management has made me weary of over reliance on tech.

Monzo. Also use it when I pay for something over the phone, where I have to give my card details and put just enough on it to pay for whatever it is I’ve bought too. Good to have this if you have any doubts or haven’t dealt with the firm you are paying before.

Had my cc scammed a couple of times in the past and although you get the money back it’s a pain in the arse. I never use a debit card for anything other than face to face either.

Not to stigmatise you specifically but is your desire to not use it at football so your other half doesn’t see your spending patterns?

I think this category is under accounted for in the club’s decision making. I know a large number of guys who will be economical with the truth at home about how many beers etc they’ve had and now it will be there to see across all the joint account statements!

I'm not anti it but I don't think it is going to make things any quicker. My office campus is cashless and the amount of times the connection drop or payments get rejected means it is no quicker than using good old fashion cash.

Plus it really isn't helpful for groups. We do a whip every week which pays for beers and taxis which will work perfectly fine every where except the Amex.

Any idea if the club has links with a world class leading card provider to help set this up?

It's not the card provider that's important …. it's the communications provider. And, unsurprisingly, the club have just moved to a provider that employees Kerry Mayo and the son of Dean Wilkins !

I doubt it very much.

The cost of banking cash is less than the merchant service charges.

Ain’t that the truth especially since it became illegal to charge extra for accepting personal credit cards, so the seller has to take all the charges. Charges for accepting cards has also crept up depending on the type of card being accepted.
