Criticising Sussex Police for being heavy handed in their operation to keep the peace at the 'March for England'. Bet she wouldn't say that if it were football fans involved.

Get the bloody Greens out ASAP!

She has the right to civilly express her opinion on the matter.

They were heavy handed, as they often are in such circumstances.

The police being heavy handed when there are thugs covering their faces, ignoring police instructions, using foul and abusive language and threatening behaviour all while they are trying the keep these thugs away from a bunch of knuckle dragging racist thugs ? How surprising ! What were they meant to do ? Give them all a cuddle ?

From what I saw they were very heavy handed.

Maybe, maybe not. In my opinion they were clearing the streets of people trying to take part in a peaceful demo. The counter protestors were breaking the law.

I would point out that I have absolutely zero affiliation to either group.

My point is that it Ms Lucas is oh so boringly predictable. If the Police had used the same tactics on either the March for England crowd, or on football supporters, she would have said nothing. Basically she was making sure that she was seen to offer moral support to a group of people who are likely to be part of her party's natural core support. In my opinion she was putting her political interests above the interests of the law.

Ahhhh, so with your 'maybe' you admit it is possible that the police were 'heavy-handed.' Given that, Lucas could well have been accurate in her description. Next, you'll be up in arms for her calling a spade a spade.

Of course it is 'possible' the Police were heavy handed you muttonhead! I am questioning Ms Lucas' motives for supporting these accusations.

Oh, and just so it is clear, I don't believe the Police were heavy handed.

All he's doing is highlighting her and a lot of people on here's hypocrisy. As woody says , if the tactics had been used against the march for england people , she and people like you , would have said a large fuckall.

Why is a thug in uniform not a thug?

A fair question given the acquitall of a Sussex Police officer who admitted kicking a detainee in the head yesterday.

Doesn't really address my comments on the Green Party leader though.

Oh god help us - conspiracy theory / I hate the police type posts coming up.

So, how exactly were the police meant to deal this this matter ? Maybe next time they just let to two groups of moronic idiots kick the living shit out of each other ? The police were damned if they did and damned if they didn't in this case. Simple answer to those complaining would be to learn to protest peacefully ( you know, as we did with no need for riot police and horses and yet we're football thugs ).

I really have no sympathy with either group of societies misfits that were involved in this - I have every sympathy for the police and especially those injured doing their duty.

In the end, 'heavy handed' is a highly subjective phrase. It only exists in perception. I don't doubt that she called it as she saw it. Someone sympathetic to one side and seeing their actions thwarted is likely to view those thwarting them as 'heavy handed'. It's just how it is, in the same way that a lot of football fans will 'see' offside calls against their team as 'wrong'. Ultimately, for whatever motive you see fit, you are entitled to be of one opinion over whether the police were heavy handed. It doesn't negate, for whatever motive she sees fit, her right to an opinion too.

This is not a conspiracy and I don't hate the police, I haven't labelled you, don't label me.

I have no sympathy for either of these groups myself, and I am no fan of Caroline Lucas.

But if you are a consistent person you have to be against the use of unnecessary violence across the board.

This is the footage which has given rise to this discussion:

Your post describes police officers regretfully and cautiously intervening with force to defend one violent group from another. Nice idea.

Watch the video and tell me what you see.

A thug in uniform is still a thug.

As I get older I am more in favour of letting the Police give anyone a kicking. Which I think says more about me than the Police.
