I think that's a simplistic view although I agree with you in part.

He fought for his country (in war where we were actually at threat) and has raised over 30 million. That's not to be sniffed at.

His prominence is down to the media not the Government. In fact I'd imagine they are a bit embarrassed. It's exposed (again) that important services rely on charity.

It's actually quite late for the Government to acknowledge him and of course the timing is a bit iffy.

But he deserves it, far more than the 99% of others who are knighted. All veterans who fought in the second world war deserved knighthoods rather than actors who lets face it are reading out other peoples words...

A very very humble man whose instant thought very early on what can I do with the few years I have left to help other people, just like I helped them before.

We can all learn from him. He is a hero.

Well put. I do find myself feeling very ambivalent about the whole thing. His intentions were of the very very best, but it's all just got out of hand.

After weeks away from NSC, I've come on here to say how dismayed I am at this news. It's simply the Tories
trying to capitalise on popularism, and totally devalues the honour.
When somebody first suggested he should be knighted basically for walking around his garden, I thought it was just a joke. I now don't know which is more laughable; this, or that your post makes you look like you don't realise Briton is a separate word!

Absolutely agree. Classic case of bandwagon jumping from all sides. If people want to donate why does it take someone walking round their garden to do it.

In no way demeaning anything he has done in his life and absolutely sure his intentions were 100% genuine but he's been victim of typical British media hijacking and over hyping. Now Boris has piped up when he can't even bother to attend briefings.

Am awaiting to be shot down.............

It's not typically British at all. Typically British would be an interest in David Beckham haircut. What's British is cynicism towards somebody who has raised 30 million from his back garden.

When did the British care about the elderly and give them a media platform ?

When you think of the bullshit that goes viral these days, here is something that will do some good.

Of course the Government had tried very belatedly to use him to bury bad news, but there is nothing nuanced regarding what has done had and what he has received very humbly.

A great achievement and all that’s already been said, but I can’t help wondering that, had he been a corporal who looked like Eddie Yeats, his arse hanging out of his trousers as he walked one end to another of a weed strewn square of concrete behind a small terraced house rather than a very sizeable garden in a country pile, he might not have got knighted...

I hope it's ok to both admire Sir Tom as a human being for just being a fantastic bloke, but also to agree with every single word of this.

The only thing I'll take issue with is your assertion that his knighthood devalues that honour. I'd say the number of Tory donors who appear on the civil list devalues it far more than this, even though the Tory habit of capitalising on popularism makes my stomach turn.

a knighthood is popularism, thats the point of the honours system. free baubles to hand out to people that groups want to honour.

I haven’t come on NSC that much recently either, but.....

Doesn’t he deserve it then?
Not many people have that impact in terms raising money.

Arguably over the years regardless of the party in government, there have been some very questionable honours handed out. IMO this is not one of them.

I think most people thought or hoped he might get a gong to go with his other medals. I was a bit surprised it was a knighthood, but good luck to the old fella. I hope he gets his day at the Palace and :whistle:meets her maj.

Quite the opposite. I feel sorry for people who don't care.

Except for Ian Duncan Smith, he may have a knighthood but he was a prize **** yesterday, prize **** today and will be a prize **** tomorrow too.

I’d expect a knighthood too if I handed a cheque over to the NHS for £32m.

Well deserved and a hero of a man. The fact that this awful Government is rinsing this story for everything it’s worth does not change my view on the inspiring Sir Tom.

Tend to agree. That said, the timing is very convenient for the government as they seek any distraction they can from the scrutiny of their decisions.

Nobody is arguing against the idea that Tom Moore's knighthood is popularism in action. But no you're wrong, the point of the honours system is clearly not popularism. If it was, we'd only see honours handed out to people who were popular. That doesn't include Tory donors past and present, including that charming Philip Green.

I have no issue with it. When you look at some of the complete shysters and no-marks who have got the tap on the shoulder for kissing arse or greasing the right palms, then why should a man who has put his life on the line for his country, and then managed to capture the imagination of people by wanting to make a difference not get recognised.

Yes it may be opportunistic by the govt, but **** it. It's a good news story at a shitty time.

You seem very triggered, go and have a nice cup of tea and a Hilary, you will feel so much better.

Yup, I mostly agree, but have to say that I have felt the ' honours system' fell into disrepute a long time ago.
How many times have any of us sat down and read/heard that so and so has been honoured and thought,' What the f--k'!???
Have to add that I do think this award is blatant popularism, but at least he is one of the good guys, unlike some of the' Sir Shysters' we could all mention.
