Don't forget that its actually law in Cape Town that all visitors must have with them, at all times, a cape. The style is not specified but there are length regulations.

Yeah I have been there a couple of times - it is probably the best city that I have ever been to.
Where abouts are you staying?
Most of the shopping, restaurants etc are based around the V and A Waterfront. The area is very safe during the day with security guards etc. There are some great restaurants with some even better views.
Obviously Table Mountain has to be done, both times I have been to Cape Town I have been up the Mountain at different times - once in the morning and once at sunset. My advice would be, if the weather is good take the chance and go up straight away as clouds etc can roll in quite fast and spoil the view.
If you want to see the City from a different angle then you can take a boat tour of the harbour and beyond which is very reasonably priced. If you want to be more adventurous then you can take a helicopter ride over the City, Table Mountain and the Cape. This is slightly more expensive but well worth it if you can afford it.
If you want to see some of the more historic sites around the city such as the fort, parliament, botanic gardens, town hall etc then I would advise going on a day tour with one of the companies. If did this and it was brilliant, you are generally in quite small group with a knowledgable guide. They pick you up and drop you off at your hotel, so couldn't be easier. I can't remember the name of the company I did it with but if I do I will PM you.
If you want to explore further afield then the tour companies do a one day wineland tour which takes to a few wine tastings in the vineyards around the Cape. Great wine and great views. In addition you go to some historic monuments and towns as well as a cheetah reserve.
Thats about it from me, enjoy it mate. It's a great city.

Robben Island, Cape Point, Let the Rock Dassies eat your lunch on top of Table Mountain, Drink loads of wine on the Wine route, meet the Penguins on Boulders beach, the South African Museum is supposed to be good but have not been (Natural History) as is the District Six museum - not been to that either but someone on NSC recommended it before.
Other than that, lie on the beach if that is your thing.

The District Six musuem is very well presented and a stark reminder of some of the more horrific excesses of the political regime in the 60s and 70s. If the politics interests you, then definitely worth a visit.
The Spier winery was our favourite of the several we visited.
The drive and walk out to Cape Point is a good trip too.

All of the above. Classic view across table bay from Blouberg Beach. A great little road trip for a few days is to go down to Aghulas point and then back through the wine country. Mr Pickwicks on Long street is a great cafe, open all night i think when i was there. The places below the apostles are really nice, with the better beaches i think.

When I was there last April, there were people going out to Robben Island but there were rumours of having to book months in advance though. Not sure if that was true though.

No, the Amphitheatre, which is further North. Giants Castle is not far from here and can be viewed from my back garden on a good day!!
Oh and MoH, cant you make it at least 2 weeks - its a long way to come for a week.
Yeah - I would say its worth queuing up for ages for the trip up to table mountain as its great up there and you can get a better feel for the city (as it really more like a group of towns plotted around a mountain). Also enjoyed the V&A waterfront as they seem to have things going on there all the time. Also went and watched some of the coloured carnival.
Getting a car and driving around all the difference bays is great fun and popping up to the university town of stellenbosch to watch some sports is nice.

Thanks KZN. It is short but - I'm sorry, horrible vile tosser alert - I need to get back in order to go skiing a week later. I'm sorry. Also, given that I've somehow got free accommodation with someone I don't yet know, a week is ok - they might object to my nocturnal antics after a day, who could blame them. If it's as great as everyone says it is, I might try and venture back to see Joachim's Low's barmy beer and sausage-fuelled army stride to glory in 2010.

All of the above. Great place to spend a week. I'd definitely make at least one excursion out to a vineyard, beautiful scenery. And this place is worth a visit for lunch, Codfather Seafood and Sushi restaurant | Restaurants Camps Bay, Atlantic Seaboard, Cape Town Region, Western Cape, South Africa the best seafood around and again a nice drive out to Camps Bay.

We sorted our wine tour through the hotel we were staying in. Mini-bus thing with a guide and commentry and I think we had our first wine tasting at about 9 in the morning.
But yeah Table Mountain (obviously), boat ride round the bay (try the sailing boat rather than the motor ones), Waterfront (try Quay Four for good seafood) and Kisrtenbosch gardens are all great.

I have a house down there as my wife is from Cape town.
Go to Moya Moya at Spiers wine farm. Good day out and you can play with the cheetahs.
A picnic at Boschendal is to be recomended.
I think the best beach is Llandudno particulaly if you have kids.
Table mountain is best just before sunset.

Just to let you know the waterfront is great but 30% more expensive than elsewhere. Camps bay is very lively and good fun. The Bayside is a great restaurant and inexpensive.
Bajia is the best restaurant in town but pricy.

You must visit Khayelitsha whilst you are there. Its a quaint little hamlet in the suburbs where you will find an eclektic mix of people. The place is much better at night as well MOH.
Mitchell`s Plain (practically next door)is also worth stopping at to look at the beautiful colonial architecture.

i went there when england played a freindly against south africa, great place. 3 hightlights for me, table mountain of course, helicopter ride along the coast from the harbour. one of the scariest things i've ever done.
it was one of those american 'huey' troop carriers from the vietnam war with no doors on it
!! we were sitting where the gunners (facing outwards) used to be with a little seat belt to hold you in......you must have a go at this.
the last thing was shark fishing off the cape, well i say shark fishing......... thats what ity said on the website when we booked it. turns out we were fishing for yellow fin tuna so the guy could sell them back at the local resteraunts. still a great day with fantastic scenery...........
