What is cancel culture

bullying of anyone who does not have "acceptable" views.

Not buying stuff from Amazon (sorry Bozza) as my small protest on treating staff like shit and avoiding paying tax is surely my right?

Is this an example of cancel culture?

no, and serves as a good example of what is/isnt. your personal boycott is just that, personal. cancel culture is where self appointed arbitrators of what is right and wrong grab virtual pitchforks and call for all to boycott the vendor for perceived transgressions. and those associated them for good measure.

That's a personal choice you make. However, the culture I refer to is one of absolutism.

Nobody is listening mate.

Sleepwalking into some pretty worrying times with some dangerous precedents already being set, and the vast majority don’t seem to want to recognise it as something requiring serious consideration until it’ll be too late.

A quick scan of this suggests to me that this is another mythical thing for people to get in a tizz about. People making a lot of noise on social media about being outraged and upset but something so they want to cancel it. This is followed by more people making a lot of noise on social media about being outraged and upset by the first lot's upset and outage.

The result seems to be the square root of nothing for those who have been 'cancelled'.

We all make decisions about how to spend our time and money and this includes deciding what we endorse and what we don't. Some of us just do it louder than others

My question is why do we allow these loud mouthed twats screaming for attention define our 'culture'?

Can anyone point to a particularly henious example of Cancel Culture because I am still not sure I've got a handle on what it is?

I'm listening.

We are 24 posts in and nobody has really explained exactly what cancel culture is our why it is so bad.

I'm asking questions about what it actually is because at this stage I don't really understand.

Can you give me a good example?

But why can't people call for boycotts?

Surely there are times when such a boycott is reasonable and appropriate?

No platforming anybody who doesn’t propagate the ‘correct’ thinking is becoming quite common.

Depends how seriously you consider the implications might be of silencing contrary opinion in the development of our future generations.

I'm not sure it "counts" as "cancel culture" but I would use Julian Assange as an example.

Releases hundreds of thousands of secret documents, many of them showing atrocities committed by the Good, Holy Western world, initially gets attention and acclaim but anything he shows, says or does is then "cancelled" by the powers that be through:
1. Very dubious rape claims that makes him persona non-grata among a lot of people and any reference to him a social suicide
2. Accusations from the right wing of being a "traitor"
3. Accusations from the left wing of being a "Putin collaborator"

Meaning he is stigmatised in every major "group" and thus everything he revealed or stated is effectively "cancelled". If he revealed a document saying that Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton had a weekend at Lolita Island where they were stabbing kittens with a blunt wooden stick, few would and no-one could care since he is "cancelled".

Can you give me an example of it happening and it's ramifications?

Isn't it just a load of twats in social media making a lot of noise?

Ah, that sounds like a decent example. He has certainly been cancelled. This is also a very dangerous precedent.

Lots of people I wouldn’t want to associate my views with, but that doesn’t mean to say they shouldn’t be debated by our students. Recently I can think of Amber Rudd, Roger Scruton and Peter Hitchens.

Any chance of some meat in the bones if those names?

I am struggling to understand cancel culture. Swansman's example gives me a good clue but names on their own aren't helping?

Amber Rudd had a speaking engagement cancelled didn't she? Because of Windrush?

Does she now have no platform to speak? Or is cancelling one show an example?

It's an example of the process.

Take Nigel Farage for example, not a man for whom I have any respect politically-quite the opposite, he would be denied a platform in many places because of his leanings.

There are good examples of cancellation, Hopkins for being one, who simply peddles hate speech. But I wouldn't shame or cancel someone who, for example, believed that multi-culturalism was a bad thing. I would want to hear their reasons why.

J K Rowling is another classic example in recent times. She is not peddling hate, but some are trying the shaming route.

The problem with shutting down is you allow extreme ideology to jump to a justification. You change people to change society, you don't change society to change people.

It’s bell-ends complaining they are getting called out for being bell-ends.

That's a simplistic definition. Who gets to do the cancelling? Some people are trying to cancel JK Rowling because she believes that Women don't have cocks and balls. People's past mistakes get dredged up. Who hasn't made mistakes? There is almost a puritanical, religious flavour to this cult of cancellation that's pretty sinister.

Thanks Pasta, that article is interesting and I am beginning to understand how this works. Certainly seems that there is a lack of backbone in certain quarters to stand up to those critisising people. What I feel the article misses is any in-depth description of people's grievances against those mentioned.

What I still don't get is how this process works. Does this all happen over social media? I can't get my head around how these people have managed to garner such power and influence of others.

"your offended and you disagree with my ideas or actions! Good luck with that, I'm happy with my choices and will carry on thanks"

Surely this kind if attitude will assist in this matter

Best example I can think of is the termination of Danny Baker's contract by the BBC following his posting of a picture of a chimp in a suit in commentary to the birth of Prince Harry's son.

Plenty of lefties have spoken up against this culture.
Stephen Fry for one. The Jonathan Pie character frequently refers to it.

It is doing the left no good at all.
It has given the far right the moral high ground on matters relating to free speech.

I have always been an advocate of "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"
