Sleep is the human body's way of regenerating itself. If you don't sleep, the energy you're using to perform normal waking functions isn't diverted to making new cells to replace old ones.
Concentration is badly affected, and if you don't sleep for a particularly long period of time, you're more likely to inadvertently kill yourself by doing something you wouldn't normally do, like walking out in front of a bus without looking. Hallucinations and other mental health issues are another by-product.
I work shifts, and sometimes (like this morning), I really struggle to concentrate on the road when driving home after a nightshift.
No matter now much I turn up the radio, or open the windows, or anything else, if your body needs sleep, it's really hard to hold off the impulse.
