I saw Horizon a few years ago on this subject and they gave the case of an American DJ who tried to go without sleep for a couple of weeks on air. He eventually broke down and was admitted to a mental hospital as a result of the damage it did to him.

Was this written for you....

I only smoke weed when I need to,
And I need to get some rest,
I confess, I burnt a hole in the mattress,
Yes, yes, it was me, I plead guilty,
And on the count of three I pull back the duvet,
Make my way to the refrigerator,
One dry potato inside, no lie
Not even bread, jam,
When the light above my head went bam!
I can't sleep, something's all over me,
Greasy, insomnia please release me,
And let me dream about making mad love on the heath,
Tearing off tights with my teeth.
But there's no relief,
I'm wide awake in my kitchen,
It's dark and I'm lonely,
Oh, if I could only get some sleep,
Creaky noises make my skin creep,
I need to get some sleep,
I can't get no sleep....

Erm ... No.

Well that would account for a few things.

If you cut off the head of a cockroach, it doesn't die from the wound, it dies of starvation.

And kinda similarly, when people were beheaded or guillotined, with their neck severed, they continued to see, hear and smell for about 4 or 5 seconds since the brain and the senses were still functional. Must have been awful to hear and see the crowd cheer as you head plopped into a basket and then smell your own blood (and shit too most likely).

Yes you can but it takes a long time. I get insomnia from time to time and my record without sleep is currently nine days.

Hasn't killed me yet. :glare:

9 days - brilliant!

i did 41 hours once, but then foolishly got drunk and ended up passed out

As a matter of fact I've been told that I suffer from sleep apnea. I wouldn't know as I'm asleep when it happens !

Actually that hasn't killed me either but for those who don't know it's when you stop breathing in your sleep. I have to say that I have woken up gasping for breathe on occaision.

2 weeks ago I had a really bad absess on my tooth and the only thing that made it any where near bearable was cold water (painkillers did nothing). I could not sleep, as the pain kicked in every 20 seconds or so, and it started on a Friday evening. I got NO sleep on Friday , Saturday or Sunday and by Monday with the pain and lack of sleep, my mental state was shot, and I am not joking, I was irrational, couldn't do simple things, had wierd conversations and arguements which I don't remember.

When the tooth was pulled, I got home and slept for 22 hours without moving......... Arrrrrrrhhhhh, please never again.

It just gave me a little insight into what it must be like going mental, because at the time it seemed perfectly normal behaviour, but in hindsight it was totally weird.

I reckon Looney must have trouble sleeping, can't be comfortable trying to rest when his head is permanently up his arse.
