You've just described to a T how it will be with my dad , I dont think there will be any need for words, just being there is enough.

I was very seriously electrocuted and clearly remember laying on the floor unable to let go of the live cable in my hands,I was thinking "what a stupid way to die", somebody/something came to me and said "You're not ready yet" and pulled the wire out of my grip. When help arrived, nobody admitted to it being one of them or had seen anyone else around who could have done it.So,yes, from my own experiences there is something else, and I have to say I have never felt so relaxed and peaceful as I did at that moment I believed I was dying.
Simple biology says no - the conscious is part of the brain and needs oxygen to function along with a little glucose for power. With the lungs not bringing in any oxygen and the heart not pumping any blood, the brain becomes "dead" - but not immediately !!
In days when people were beheaded, guillotine, axeman executioner etc. once the head is severed, the brain remains conscious for a few seconds [maybe as many as 5] during which time the victim is able to see and hear what is going on - before the lights go out.
The subconscious is another thought [literally] and the term "headless chickens" comes from the subconscious actions of a chicken that's had its head removed continuing to move for a short while - however, with the brain detached, this can't really be the subconscious at work and can only be muscle spasm.
Life after death is a whole different debate .....
And condolences to everyone who has loved ones with a terminal prognosis.
