Chanting from the stands is so cherished because even if it gets a bit unpleasant at times it is 'real', not muzzled in any way, not just what the FA says is OK, not the sort of club spin in the programme. That's not to say it can't go too far, and that's what stewards are for (supposedly), to curb it.
But Sol Campbell has stopped short in this phone call of really dealing with his issue. Which is that he gets the gay chants everywhere. If he isn't, I can see that would be very tiresome. If he is, surely he'd be much better off coming out.
Instead he makes a lot of veiled references to verbal abuse, and doesn't spell out what his exact problem is. It would be a lot easier if he did. There are many types of verbal abuse and some are very funny, and no one would want to ban them.
PS
He also gets a load of shit from teams like West Ham about his half-time walk-out/meltdown for Arsenal against the Hammers. 'He's going home in a minute'. Are we going to ban that?
