Campbell: abuse has to stop

Chanting from the stands is so cherished because even if it gets a bit unpleasant at times it is 'real', not muzzled in any way, not just what the FA says is OK, not the sort of club spin in the programme. That's not to say it can't go too far, and that's what stewards are for (supposedly), to curb it.

But Sol Campbell has stopped short in this phone call of really dealing with his issue. Which is that he gets the gay chants everywhere. If he isn't, I can see that would be very tiresome. If he is, surely he'd be much better off coming out.

Instead he makes a lot of veiled references to verbal abuse, and doesn't spell out what his exact problem is. It would be a lot easier if he did. There are many types of verbal abuse and some are very funny, and no one would want to ban them.

PS

He also gets a load of shit from teams like West Ham about his half-time walk-out/meltdown for Arsenal against the Hammers. 'He's going home in a minute'. Are we going to ban that?

The truth is that all clubs have arseholes who overstep the line - mainly because they haven't got a clue where the line is.

Yes players have a responsibility but the sad fact is that football at all levels attracts people who for no justifiable reason think it ok to hurl vial abuse.

What can be done about these idiots is another thing.....

"I am an international player who has given his whole career to club and country. I think I deserve more than this.

"I know some people may be a little bit disgruntled at how I left certain clubs. I totally understand that.

Do you know, I don't think he does:lol::lol::lol:

Go and spend your overblown wages in a shit-hole like emsworth you pathetic whicngeing git.

I always have my vial confiscated before I get into the ground, before I get the chance to hurl it.

That was yonks ago. They're still on his back?

I don't know; pathetic whingeing Premiership footballers and pathetic whingeing Premiership football fans - they bloody well deserve each other.

Campbell was Spurs skipper, made out he was a fan and then signed for the traditional rivals. Imagine Nobby Horton or an older Tiny Cox signing for Palarse.

Footballers arn't fans they're professionals. They'll go to whoever or wherever they can get the best deal for themselves. The sooner fans learn to accept this, the sooner we can move on from the pretence that they "love" the club like we do, and we can get on with heckling them accordingly.

Pathetic from a sad person who got so depressed over what to spend £80K a week on.

And before you all start depression is also about circumstance.

Words fail me when footballers openly abuse the referee or linesman but whinge about fans.

Reckon Campbell's in the wrong profession, and has been for some time. Poor sensitive soul. Notice he don't say no to the money tho. Maybe he should be a librarian on near-minimum wage. Would seem more suited to his special needs.

It's ironic that i know someone's cousin who is a staff nurse and he said Campbell came in their hospital and he was rude arrogant and generally nasty.Fact.
Look's like he is no different after all.

Absolutely PATHETIC Sol.
Crowds getting on players backs has happened for decades, probably since the game first began. Of course you have to draw the line at racist abuse, but general catcalls and pisstakes are all part of the game. Its only nowadays in this ridiculous politically-correct era (where you're not even allowed to hear the word "FAGGOT" in a twenty-year old Christmas song any more) that the likes of Sol start getting a quivering bottom lip and going all precious over it.

f*** I hate the Premiership sometimes. Players like Campbell just want a happy-clappy atmosphere-free environment where everyone just turns up to kiss the players arses and tell them how WORLD CLASS they are (just like Sky do). Well f*** you Campbell - you can't handle a bit of abuse from the stands ? Well then give up your hundred-grand a week job and go and paint someones ceiling instead, you f***ing great PONCE.

"This is a human rights situation" - jesus wept. Get a f***ing grip.

:nono:

Not sure he wants a happy-clappy environment, he probably just wants an environment where people don't scream at him for 90 mins calling him a f***ing ****. Personally, I think that's not unreasonable.

No-one wants to see the wit and piss-taking taken out of terrace humour, but let's face facts terrace humour isn't what it was. The last time Steve Coppell came back to the Withdean, our ex-manager, a great supporter of our cause, was called a paedophile and kiddy-fiddler by the bloke next to me. For 90 minutes. An example witticism was 'f***-off Coppell you kiddy-fiddling wanker, yeah, you, yer ****, f*** off'. Who actually thinks this is a) acceptable 2) in any way amusing?

I quite agree that there is some abuse that crosses the line, however, players have to expect banter and abuse from opposing fans, that's part of the rivalry of football in the same way as the banter and abuse between rival fans, I have to pay good money for the privilige of having opposing fans calling me Gay, wanker etc, I reckon I could put up with being paid £100k a week to suffer that!. It's not right though when fans disrespect players who've had family members die etc.

If players want good behaviour on the terraces perhaps they should get their own house in order first. They can't expect to spend 90 minutes abusing and conning the Ref, and cheating in every way possible, then expect the fans on the sidelines to behave impeccably, they're supposed to be the role models, they need to lead by example..

Terrace humour is as it always was - its certainly no worse than when I was standing on terraces in the 80's. The difference is that the game has moved further and further away from its working class roots, and so have the players. Going to the football is now like going to the theatre, you're all supposed to sit there in your alotted seat in your bobble hat, stay seated, wave your flag and politely applaud the players to and form the field.

Campbell isn't just talking about the vile abuse (ie abuse of the players family, racism, paedo chants). He talks of fans "belittling" players (ahhhhhh), and then lumps that in with racist abuse. Well I'm sorry but thats just crap. If a player can't hack it having the piss taken out of him because he's shit, or because he's a former player, or because he sends a shot into row Z, then he's in the wrong job. Its part of the game, always has been and (hopefully) always will be. Fans DO belitle players they don't like, sometimes en-masse. Deal with it.

If Campbell was playing in the 70's / early 80's then he'd might have been putting up with those vile monkey chants - and if that was the case, I would 100% support his comments. But he's not. So he should shut his gob and stop being such a ponce about it all. Banging on about "human rights", for christ sake. He's got no idea.

I know Campbell's not strictly talking about England players, but I wholeheartedly support the barracking of England players playing for their clubs at grounds around the country since the Euro debacle. If a garage mechanic was paid 100k a week and made a mess of servicing your car you'd be outraged.

All the time Campbell is willing to take an obscene pay cheque for being part of the theatre that is football then he has to take the crap that goes with it in my book. No one's stopping him walking away.
