Former Villa striker Garry Thompson told BBC WM 95.6:

However, one name that has taken a fair few people by surprise is Sami Hyypia who can currently be backed at 14/1 to return to English soil with Villa.

During his playing days the former defender accumulated over 300 appearances for Liverpool, where he won the Champions League, UEFA Cup, a brace of FA Cups and League Cups, a couple of Community Shields, plus two UEFA Super Cups, before ending his career over at Bayer Leverkusen.

In 2012 the ex-Finland international then ventured into the managerial world with the German club - firstly as joint manager, then solo - with whom he led to 3rd in the Bundesliga and into the Champions League, before suffering the sack in 2014.

Hyypia would then return to England with Brighton, but it’s fair to say he had a shocker, resigning from his post after six months following a woeful run of one win from 18 matches.

He was last seen at the helm of Swiss side FC Zurich, a position he held for the majority of the 2015/16 season, with the club subsequently relegated from the top-flight.

Given Hyypia’s dubious record in the managerial arena, it would be a huge shock if Aston Villa opted for his services, although you simply never know these days…

I'll always remember when Villa came down here in our promotion season...a group of them chanting ''you're only here for the Villa'' (crap)..there was this sense of entitlement from them...I loved going up there at the end of the season ..us promoted....them no where....joy

Whoever goes there is certainly going to have their work cut out. The expectations are ridiculous, being as Villa as a club and fanbase don't feel they "belong" at that level, despite the chronic mismanagement there over many, many years. Randy Lerner completely lost interest and spent years trying to bin them off. Then that clown Tony Xia came in, thought the Championship would be a breeze, and nearly bankrupted them trying to get them up. Now they have these new Egyptian owners who (apparently) have loadsamoney, but as we've seen many, many times before, that doesn't necessarily translate into them running a football club with any gumption.

It'll be interesting to see who they appoint. No doubt it'll be a "big name", maybe a famous ex-player, someone high profile to generate lots of clicks and get Villa back on the map. That'll do for the next six months at least, till it all goes belly-up again. Shambles of a club.

You have to remember that Steve lost both his parents in the last year and prior to that between them they had lengthy illnesses. When someone close to their parents are going through that, it can be difficult to make work your priority during that time.

Steve has been successful in Management many times at Championship level and he will be again, if he chooses to continue in Management. Personally, I think the man should welcome and take the break he probably needs for a bit and recharge his batteries.

During his time off with his ailing parents, Steve's ''Assistant'' obviously wasn't up to the task of stepping into his shoes. Probably because he is more used to hanging on to the ''shirt tails'' of better Coaches and Managers than himself.

He kept changing between 1 up front and 2 up front, and switching positions of players like Grealish, regardless of whether the team played well, a sign of a muddled mind and clearly he had a lot on his plate.

Also, the impression you're giving from your last sentence is that CH is still quite bitter about CC leaving, which thus suggests he hasn't been able to properly replace him.
