I can not bring myself to vote Labour for the first time since 1974. Actually I did vote Lib-Dem once - but that was a vote against Mellor in Putney, in (must have been) 1983 (or was it 82).

This is purely an anti-Blair stance. I saw Prime Ministers questions and a Tory back-bencher asked why he had found time to write a personal note to Ozzie Osbourne when he fell off his quad bike, but nothing to one of his servicemen constituents who is now an amputee.

Even as a lifelong Labour voter, there does come a time when you have to say enough is enough. f*** the Tories. They'll never get my vote. At worst, I'll abstain, and if that allows the Tories in, then so be it. That's Blair's problem. Blair IS the problem. And the current proposals for indefinite detention without trial are just about tipping me and a lot of people like me over the edge of not voting Labour. And some of the people I'm talking about are hardcore Labour activists of the eighties. Not the same as voting Tory at all - even if it has the same end result. There has to be a mechanism for letting these currants know they are bang out of order, and as the Labour Party appears unable or unwilling to rein these people in, then sadly they maybe need another spell in opposition to make them go and sit in a corner and think about what they've done. A tragedy for the people who rely on the Labour Party to ensure they get a fair deal in life, but there you go.

The problem is that Blair and the Labour Party aren't the same thing, Tom. Both Brighton's Labour MPs are not Blair fans and want something more honest and better for the British people than he provides. By punishing them, you help rightwing ghouls like the Tories get back into power and they will be a million times worse than Labour on education, the health service, yes, even on a much less important issue, their treatment of football fans. A spell of opposition for Labour wouldn't regenerate the party, it would just leave party members desperate enough to fall for another Blair-type, which is, of course, what happened last time. I'm not merely a Labour voter, I'm still a member even though my contempt for Blair is as profound as yours. The fact is, Blair wants dissenting voices to leave the Labour Party because it leaves his clique with more power - and I'm not going to give him what he wants
