It's always easy in opposition because you only have to moan about what has happened. Now,I know there are a lot of tories on here who have consistently opposed Brown, some have even suggested what SHOULD be done, but many others are bandwagon jumpers.

There were few complaints when the gravy train was running, house prices were escalating and all that lovely equity was withdrawn to fund the hols in Mauritius, the second home, that lovely car and caravan etc.

Now its squealing like stuck pigs.Brown always talked about prudence, but perhaps it was just talk.Others were prudent in their personal budgets, and will come through this unprecedented downturn.........esp those who didn't gamble on buy to let,the hols in Mauritius, that car and caravan.

I remember when the Tories were in power and had to do rather than to say,and a right bloody fiasco it was, too.

Personally,I feel the best bet is the Seagulls Party. But that's just an opinion.(See below)

Yup, it's the end of the boom years for those ne'er-do-wells who squandered their ill-gotten on a new car and caravan

In London village.
yes lets hope " dave" does take a f***ing great machete to the ridiculously bloated public sector that has become labour's powerbase.

I think you are being a bit harsh on our brave service men and women.

I think this is right. I'm not a Labour Party supporter - I didn't vote for them in '97, '01 or '05 and I won't for them in '10 - but I think some of the criticism is ridiculous.

It's easy to say that Brown should have stopped easy credit but if he'd made any attempt to have done so, he'd have been SLAUGHTERED by the City, by the likes of the Mail/Torygraph, by the Conservative Party and probably by people on here. We'd have heard about how Labour was trying to destroy investors, kill the housing market and all sorts of fanciful nonsense.

The Tories said nothing about the lack of regulation and the easy credit. The only two public figures who said anything were Vince Cable - and he was regarded as doddery old fool when it came to choosing a Lib Dem leader - and David Blanchflower who was thought of some sort of weirdo when he was the sole member of the BoE's Monetary Policy Committee who said there was a problem. He was generally referred to as a maverick economist and not taken seriously at all (but then, as a Brighton supporter he must be used to treated as a nutter). The Tories certainly didn't support his point of view, in fact, they tried to get him removed from the MPC.

Now, there's a global crisis and suddenly everyone's an expert. I haven't decided how I'm going to vote next time but it sure isn't going to be Tory, a party that said nothing in the good times and have little idea in the bad.

Gotta be LibDem then hasn't it ? Being as they seem to be the only ones who have a guy who has half a clue about the economy.

Comments like this are exectly why this country is going down the tubes.

I'll let you in on what I think for a minute - the reason we're all done for is that we hate ourselves. Not just dislike or are uneasy with, we absolutely hate and loathe everything about ourselves.

We've got a brilliant health service. I can break my leg tonight, go to a hospital and expect to receive an x-ray, a proper diagnosis, drugs to relieve the pain and a plastercast to help repair it. Try explaining that to someone in Russia, much less Rwanda.

Our education system, while far from perfect, is pretty good. Teachers work bloody hard to get kids through exams. Read the Daily Mail and you 'know' that kids are lynching their teachers day in day out as well as there being some huge conspiracy to make everyone stupid by making exams easier. Actually speak to a real teenager and the large majority know that they need to work hard or they will not get a job and will never get a chance to better themselves. Talk to many young people in the workplace and they despair at some of their older colleagues who are inflexible, arrogant and grossly overpaid comapred to what they actually contribute.

Which brings me to my next point. At what point did we begin to hate kids so much? Far from actually trying to work out what they are about and why a lot of them are so pissed off and angry we just call then chavs and laugh heartily at pictures of them. Wtih that sort of discrimination in our blood we might as well go back to calling black people niggers. This might sound a bit obvious but if we make kids feel like shit then they act up. Some to a larger degree than others. I'm certainly not saying hug a hoodie but yelling at them on trains for talking to their friends on trains isn't goign to help either.

These are just three points but there are many more. The England team loses to another good team so they have to be a national disgrace and one of the worst teams in the world. Our seaside resorts look a bit run down but let's not invest in them, let's all slag them off and mock people who go there. The English flag has been captured by racists and political apathy is now at such a level that it really doesn't matter who is in power becuase we (and by that I generally mean the white working class) are too bloody lazy and complacent to do anything about it. No wonder the Poles come over here and see us as a soft touch. Our media is in such a bad state that the real story is irrelevant and the soundbite rules - perfect for the Big Brother generation.

Until we actually start to like ourselves again and regain a bit of national pride then I honestly think we're just going to continue on this cycle.

Possibly the best post I've ever read on NSC.

So many people don't realise how GOOD we've got it.

I notice in almost 2 hours NO ONE has answered my question.

Actually, I think I know the answer.

We realised how good we had it but guess what it was all on the never never.

Well I guess in the grand scheme of things I'm a young'un (23) so wasn't there for the "good old days". Perhaps if I was older I'd agree more with the term "Broken Britain".

To be honest any neutral would have to admit Cameron wiped the floor with Brown/Darling.

I disagree. I've been following the reaction online most of the day and was surprised to find quite so much disappointment in Cameron's spiel.

I think a lot of people really wanted to see Darling and Brown get a deserved hammering but it just didn't materialise and an opportuity has gone begging.
