According to Abu Dhabi newspaper The National, a life sentence means a maximum of 25 years in jail, after which Hedges would be deported.

I used to drive young UAE lads from the old Northeye Prison, near Bexhill, to various engineering colleges in the region.
These were Shoreham Airport, Worthing, Tonbridge and Hastings.
Majority of them had no interest in being over here, and it showed.
Some were very arrogant and self obsessed IMO.
There's me driving this crappy old coach, filled with oil rich teenagers.
I didn't feel happy with the situation I was in, so I moved onto more salubrious customers, beanos to the coast

Having served in the RAF in Aden '65-'67. With reference to the Yemeni civil war that has nothing to do with us. The Adeni people wanted us ( the British ) gone. At the end of '67 we obliged. Yes there is suffering of unimaginable proportions going on but their lifestyle is light years different to ours and foremost it's tribal. Something that is almost impossible to police and control, Saddam Hussein did it in Irag by shear force. Then the good old West the civilised force that we are opened a Pandoras box and still the fighting goes on making the Saddam regime look perfect.
Onto the UAE thing, they are again a race of people very oil rich and we go there for our holidays and business and once a year for the GP. Some idiots disregard their rules and customs because it doesn't suit them and then cry wolf when arrested etc. This case while unsatisfactory has an element of truth, a rather fishy subject to be studying.

People who have been driven from their lands, murdered, and then penned into a ghetto with little clean water and electricity and are also subject to human abuses by a supposedly a modern democratic state are very likely to fight back by supporting an organisation that does exactly that. When the Palestinians get justice there will be no need for Hamas ..... until that time and a time when Israel becomes a proper law abiding non-terrorist state, yes, I'll support the aims of Hamas to get Palestinian lands back.

Depends on the reasons for going, I've been to the UAE a couple of times for holidays. and not encountered any problems.
I'd happily go again without any worries.
There's no point being the only country with morals, you just get ignored while the rest of the world does business. We should be encouraging the world as a whole no to deal with countries like the UAE.

More so when you consider he would of obviously known through preliminary research before going for his “studies” this was an extremely provocative subject with potential risks, which would have put most people off. He is allegedly a very clever person, which begs the questIon how can one be naive to such risks, when your studying risks and security ?

The Jews know a lot about being put into ghettos and will do everything they can to avoid any threat to their race. The Palestinians and other Arabs in the region have been quite open about their feelings about the Jews and what they will do when they get the upper hand. This has resulted in a number of conflicts over the last 60 years and the steady development of a 'right wing' siege mentality.
Don't get me wrong Israel is not in the 'right' but the situation would not have got to this if the Arab countries had accepted various deals in the 70s.
You can't turn back time and move the Jews out , both sides need to change their approach and that does means the Arabs & Palestinians have to change their views.
The problem is that for the first 20 years the Palestinians who moved out of what became Israel were also mistreated and ghettoised by the Egyptian and Jordanian governments and these camps developed into breeding grounds for the early terrorists.
I assume you are aware that Egypt also closed their border with Gaza because of the terrorist threat it posed.

this is what you will have a hard time convincing people of ........most of these countries are/were ruled with an iron fist but it suited western agenda to get rid of Saddam & Gaddafi thus destabilising an entire region and reduce the perceived , immediate risk to our Israeli buddies .......well how did that work out, i know for a fact there are some gargantuan building projects under way in Iraq and the Emirates using expat expertise , i play golf with a Geordie lad who has just come off a 5 year contract 3 months on 2 weeks off in Iraq , he has always been very cagey about what he does out there and one recent afternoon after a few too many coldies he told me he had to sign a non disclosure agreement with his employer (BP) and that he has over 200,000 USD tied up for 3 years dependant on him keeping certain aspects of his vocation quiet.
The part of your post i was alluding to is the tribalism , it is a massive problem in the developing world .
