I assume that in their medieval justice system life means life in this case.
Or are they more enlightened ?

It seems to mean life until some behind the scenes dealing between governments and then he gets out on a pardon or something.I assume that in their medieval justice system life means life in this case.

"researching the country's security strategy." sounds an awful lot like spying.

I really don't know why the UK keeps doing business with these disgusting backward, stone age Middle East states. Well OK, I do, oil and weapons, but it's about time we put our morals first.
Yet you support a terrorist group in Hamas lol
Agreed. On the same day that Save the Children have reported
...and we are still selling Arabs weapons
Just illustrates that there are some 'no go' countries and it is just not worth the risk of going there.
There's no point being the only country with morals, you just get ignored while the rest of the world does business. We should be encouraging the world as a whole no to deal with countries like the UAE.I really don't know why the UK keeps doing business with these disgusting backward, stone age Middle East states. There would be if the trial was 5 minutes long and he was jailed for life.I agree!
If an Arab had been convicted and sentenced in a UK court for spying after putting forward that defence I don’t think there would be many complaints.

Yes, that really sounds odd. At the very least, it's extremely naive and risky.
"researching the country's security strategy." .
Is this what Boris helpfully said?
No, it's what Durham University says he was doing.

People who have been driven from their lands, murdered, and then penned into a ghetto with little clean water and electricity and are also subject to human abuses by a supposedly a modern democratic state are very likely to fight back by supporting an organisation that does exactly that. When the Palestinians get justice there will be no need for Hamas ..... until that time and a time when Israel becomes a proper law abiding non-terrorist state, yes, I'll support the aims of Hamas to get Palestinian lands back.
Having served in the RAF in Aden '65-'67. With reference to the Yemeni civil war that has nothing to do with us. The Adeni people wanted us ( the British ) gone. At the end of '67 we obliged. Yes there is suffering of unimaginable proportions going on but their lifestyle is light years different to ours and foremost it's tribal. Something that is almost impossible to police and control, Saddam Hussein did it in Irag by shear force. Then the good old West the civilised force that we are opened a Pandoras box and still the fighting goes on making the Saddam regime look perfect.
Onto the UAE thing, they are again a race of people very oil rich and we go there for our holidays and business and once a year for the GP. Some idiots disregard their rules and customs because it doesn't suit them and then cry wolf when arrested etc. This case while unsatisfactory has an element of truth, a rather fishy subject to be studying.
