They are included. They take an average of all companies prices. They use a basket of goods and services.
An economist on pm just said that the effect of this will possibly put as much as 1% on inflation by the autumn

This is getting quite ridiculous. The UK currently produces about 70% of its own gas.

Other countries are not having any problems whatsoever

the companies are taking the piss and the UK public are letting them walk all over you

with gas and petrol, its time for the government to say enough is enough, and bring an end to this:angry:

UK Stocks are more or less obsolete, this is why it is being imported...hence the cost of wholesale costs!

Its a case of when, rather than IF the other suppliers do it, now BG have increased, I guarantee the remainder will now follow

"and Fat Boy Brown does bugger all for the people"
says seagull_special.

"its time for the government to say enough is enough, and bring an end to this" says franks brother.

I agree with you two, but I'm sure that neither of you have the same idea as me.

"Poor privatised souls, all those hungry shareholder mouths to feed"

Exactly Tom Hark, Preston Park.

It is time for the three former public utilities (Gas, Electricity and Water) to be re-nationalised. The only way to bring down these immoral prices is to get back to the main reason for these organisations, that is to supply to consumer needs. Sod profiteering and fat cat salaries.

But in reality world oil costs are impacting, food, fuel, logistics, the list goes on and on.

People not buying houses due to the "credit crunch"...this impacts the building trade (the biggest employer in the uk), its an ever increasing (and woorying one) circle... It will get worse before it gets better worringly.

Sorry Northstander, but you are being taken in. If these commodities were nationalised you would not get these disastrous price hikes.

Are you sure? For a start, we have a humongous debt (ever growing) which needs to be serviced and how much would it cost to re-nationalise our industries?

I really do not see prices falling if they were brought back to the state. The real solution is alternative sources of energy.

BOF. Yes it would cost to re-nationalise, but the end justifies the means. Yes there would be cheaper bills if gas, electricity and water were brought back in to public ownership. You have only received bills from private companies for these commodities. I have received bills from both public and private. I certainly know which were cheaper ( and by a bloody mile.)

I'll take your word for it :D , but wasn't demand lower when the utilities were private? Obviously, the companies are geared towards satisfying the shareholder, but how much does it add on to the bill and is it more than servicing/paying for the company?

If the company were to be nationalised, would we have to bring the parts that have been off-shored, back to Britain? Would opertaing costs increase with the minimum wage?

The sad part is that this will be expensive now, but will be the direct cause of deaths this winter. When people are forced to pay to heat their houses, all the "helping people to make their homes energy efficient" means nothing. There is almost nothing you can do to bring the price down, the government will not step in, and they will charge what they like because they can.

Don't go all technical on me BOF. I am just a consumer. I vote other guys in to fathom a way. I just know from experience which is cheaper.

So who is going to get the blame for people starving as they cannot afford the increasing cost on food etc

Everyone is moaning about increased costs, I work on a debt team and the people calling in as they have just got back from their holiday in spain and found a letter asking for money they owe..or calling in moaning about the cost of their mobile bills...whilst MTV is playing on the tv on their sky digibox

Lets be realistic....its not just utility bills on the increase?

What I dont get about if we nationalised the utility bills, why would it be cheaper and where would the energy be generated or bought from?

Huge though the price rises are, we have learned a great lesson this last winter. Due to extensive building work on our home, we lost our cental heating two weeks before xmas. Some time in the next few weeks, the new system should be up and running. However, although we have 4 children at home under 10, we managed the winter very comfortably with two oil fired heaters..........and a lot of extra sweaters.....! This year , we will probably do just the same and get more sweaters on. The children never complained at all............and they seemed to have far less colds this year.

Northstander as I said to BOF, "Don't go all technical on me." You and I do not have to fathom that out. We elect people to do that.

Where there is a will, there is a way.
