Funnily enough our fellow Europeans in France, Spain and Germany are not being hammered with the same increases in their fuel bills. I wonder why that is? It strikes me as odd that EDF can keep increases in prices down to less that 10% for their French customers yet pass on much higher charges to the Brits. How we get ourselves in the position is beyond me. British Energy PLC will soon be in French hands as well. The way we flog off all our national assets without a seconds thought makes me sick.

Northstander as I said to BOF, "Don't go all technical on me." You and I do not have to fathom that out. We elect people to do that.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

sorry didnt mean it that way, just wanted to understand your argument in how it would be cheaper, thats all? ?

???

I agree.
Its gas gas GAS for me.

I used to think that, until I got bought one of the sensitive ceramic ones that heat up quickly, get very hot (and cool down quickly)

If you get a good one, you've got just as much control as gas and you haven't got to f*ck about cleaning it.

I am an old codger Northstander, and therefore I have experienced many years of bills from the gas, electricity and water boards during the time that they were nationalised. Actually water was just 1p on the rates.

There were many promises before privatisation that prices would not go up considerably. They have proven to be hollow promises. The latest increases are a piss take. Enough is enough. It is time to go back to when supplying to the consumers is more important than making huge profits.

I understand that, however I need to know how the prices would go down if we nationalised? What I mean is, would Nationalised firms get Cheap Energy elsewhere and if so, where?

I despair for this country at times. How did we get ourselves into this mess?

Something is definitely rotten in the state of Denmark.

Northstander. I can see that when you sat an exam you expected to have the answers at the same time. It don't work like that.

Your question is still influenced by profit. Get profit out of your head, and accept loss making as a possibility when supplying services that are nationalised.

Thats obvious. This country is more in debt then when Labour were first elected in 97.So lets introduce a 1000 new stealth taxes on the population, using global warning as a smoke screen. The cost of living has rocketed as well.Once fuel goes up so does everything else.

Its because they stockpile their energy resources. So when there is greater demand (in the winter), or when the global price fluctuates, they're ready for it and don't need to pass on these vast, extortionate hikes overnight to their consumers.

As always, this country is f***ed. And as soon as I've stashed enough to emigrate, I am f***ing OUT of this backward hick joke of a nation.

Or alternatively we demand that Government just does what it is supposed to do AND NO MORE.

Keep the streets safe, look after the sick, repel foreign invaders that sort of thing. NOT tell us what to eat, what to drive, what and where to smoke, what we can see, where we can go. No more criminalising things where there's no victim, no more milking the motorist. No more pandering to the idle, the criminal and the workshy.

No more Nanny state. We as grown ups are expected to make our own decisions on what's best for us and live by them. In return the government promises not to interfere.

We need a new law. Call it the Human Responsibilities Act. It sits alongside and supercedes the Human Rights Act. If you bring a case because your rights are being impinged, if you are claiming dole, if you are on benefits then under the new act you have to agree to do your part in making this country a fair society.

IF you can work then you will work. IF you can't find work then you will do voluntary work. IF you can't prove that you have done everything reasonable to bring about what you regard as your rights then you can't bring a case under the Human Rights Act. It's your responsibility to treat other people with the same respect that you demand. Enshrine THAT in law.

Also scrap all the piddling stupid technical laws and bring about laws based on principles rather than fine minutae. A racist assault is the same as any other assault. We already had sufficient laws for that. WE didn't need all these new laws. Just better enforcement of the existing ones.

f***ing socialism and the rewarding of mediocrity.

Grrrrr....................I'll get off my soapbox now.

Bulldog. Think you will find things like fuel, heating, mortages and everyday foodstuffs are not included. Based on things like, Spam, light bulbs, paper clips that sort of stuff ! Otherwise inflation would be about 20% The way it is going we will be using these.

Thats a shame because my next pay rise is linked to the rate of rpi so I was hoping it might be a good one to help soften the blow of ever increasing fuel costs.

Do you really think that Gordon Brown runs Britain, Do you really think Bush runs the US. They dont, they are just the puppets of powerful, bankers and big company bosses. If they really wanted to help us and lower petrol prices and gas prices, they could. It is because they are in the pockets of these big companies, that they wont do it. And on it goes.... they continue to rake in the profits, while people like you continue to believe that all this is just coincidence.

How is it that BP earn 7 BILLION profits, whilst we struggle to pay the bills, and the general public do nothing, they are stealing our money from under our noses.

It's the combination of these companies announcing record profits then a couple of months later announcing record price rises that is particularly sickening. It's pure greed. These people have no shame, and at some point state intervention will be necessary to force them to start acting like responsible providers of basic services.

European prices are about 40% higher than Britain's already, apparently.

Not sure that is true. Where did you get your info from?
