There are many reasons why a buying club would accept it. Sell on clauses are very common in the lower leagues.

The only one I can think of is that they are desperate to do the deal and have no choice. In the old days that may have been the case but these days a young player can simply run down his contract and leave on whatever terms he wishes. Happy to be proved wrong and freely admit I am only speculating.

That's definitely a reason.

However, typically, clubs like us always have a one year option in our young players contracts. So it's very rare there would be a situation where one of our young players was out of contract at the end of a season and could just walk away. Additionally, if a club offers a player under the age of 24 a new contract, they decline it and sign for another club, the other club has to pay compensation. So in theory, say one of our young players turned down a new contract and then signed for MK Dons, MK Dons would have to pay us compensation.

By agreeing to a sell on clause, clubs lower down the league can typically sign higher quality players at a lower initial fee.

In that MK Dons scenario who sets the compensation ?

Østigard just scored his first goal in English football, according to Jeff. Unbelievable!

So two centre backs playing well in that Championship and one in the Dutch top tier. Which of these is going to be promoted to the senior squad next season? I can’t see it being more than one, unless we sell someone. I also can see us selling Ostigaard and Clarke next season if we don’t promote the to the first-team squad.

Ostigard out of contract in the summer unfortunately

I can see Clarke returning to us to boost our left-sided/left footed defence options.

Probably depends if we ship out any of our match squad defenders? Eg. If we got an offer for Ben White.

Otherwise I don’t think we have room to bring any back, unless we let Dan Burn go.

Gyokeres also just scored for Cov! (Edit: beaten to it).

Not an Albion loanee but former Kingston Kestrel and Lewes Rook David Wheeler just made it 3-0 for Wycombe at Rotherham.

We have a one year option though.
Think we will take that up. He may well be the one we want to keep: we do need another CB now we play 3 at back. We have been fortunate that one of our 3 remaining defenders has not yet got injured or suspended and I expect Potter to want another body next season.

Still think the left footed/left side playing Clarke is the more likely one to bring in.
