Was us fans that made the difference today. Take note, Withdean whingers :)

.

Damn, damn and double -dog damn.Couldn't get to this one.But what you say reflects something of a post I made on another thread about the different atmosphere at away games, and how the team react to it.We have to play 23 league games at Withdean, our opponents just the one. They grit their teeth and get on with it;our players teeth must be ground to the gums.

Withdean is a cemetery, and until we get Falmer we are buried in it.Visiting teams just leave the flowers and go home.

But the atmosphere at withdean can be good, when we have exciting, successful football to watch, and we're not being charged over the odds for it. When we first came back the place was rocking, the team played well it was a fortress.

It is cyclical, but if the team was getting it done on the pitch, the fans would respond.

The atmosphere is better at away games because the ticket prices are cheaper, and the match is the highlight of the day, you're up early and on the road, maybe you get to the destination early enough to have a look around town, check out a local restaurant or pub, go in for the game - the reason you're there, then enjoy a game that cost you a comparatively reasonable amount, and you go in determined to enjoy it. It is like a one day vacation.

Home games are the opposite, you're in your regular home, maybe you go shopping in the morning, do some chores, wash the car, mow the lawn etc. maybe even work a half day shift (all day in the case of midweek games), then spend premiership money on a ticket to watch third tier football. It's a couple of hours taken out of your day and when the games over you get back on the park and ride to your car then drive home for dinner with the family, get ready to leave and go off with mates to the same locals you trawl through most weekends etc. The home game is just one of many things you do that day, it's meant to be the fun part of the weekend, but is so not value for money you resent it more if the game isn't living up to expectations.

Fans want to have a reason to scream and shout. The players have to give it to them, and if they don't do it early enough they will lose the fans.

Were you at Millwall?! The football was, for the most part, shocking. But the fans GOT BEHIND THE TEAM regardless and were the 12th man.

f*** me, I can't believe people can't see this

Did you read my entire post or just that line? An away game isn't about the quality of football, it's about enjoying the entire day, making the most of it.

Just first line, sorry :lolol:

Away games are a big day out, and they are exciting. And I agree with you about home games sometimes being a small part of an otherwise uninspiring day (not for me, because living in London, they're 'away' games, too!). But home fans need to set all that aside and make some noise. And the players respond in kind.

On Saturday, the passing was poor for much of the game, the ball was lobbed aimlessly forward, there was very little movement off the ball and the football was pretty poor (bar the odd exciting moment here and there). But the players battled 100% and fought their bollocks off - and I believe they did that in response to the atmosphere we, the fans, created. We sang from the off, created a cracking atmosphere and the players came through.
