Back of C Block..., and chain-smoking. I ran out of baccie and was knicking ciggies of the bloke behind me.
It was a very odd day, especially after the blistering heat of the County Ground. I drove down from the Golden Ford in the pissing rain, hoping that a lightening strike didn't fry my MkII. The storm finished by the time I got to Mill Road, and you could literally smell that it was going to be a memorable evening.
Lets cut to the chase though, it was a crap game, but I will treasure the emotional lows and highs of that evening for the rest of my life. Swindon carried on where they left off, and Tommy Spooney just kept on missing. The inevitable happened though, Swindon scored and the game went to extra time. In a way I think Swindon scored too early in extra time, I think when they nosed ahead all the effort they put in battering us over the previous two games caught up and they visibly drained. That second period of extra time was just too long for them to hold out against the Albion's increasingly desperate efforts. Even so I knew we'd blown it, I was just numb watching it all, but I couldn't tear myself from watching the car-wreck of our season (this is where I was chain-smoking).
Then Virgo scored.
That was it penalties. I could see we would win. The Swindon players were gone. Even so, it was bloody nerve-wracking watching!!
With a wheelchair bound mate under cover at Withdean. Nerve wracking night. Went through all emotions possible - tension, apprehension, despair, total despair, suicidal, delirium, ecstasy etc.
My son was mascot that night and he kept saying "I'm not a lucky mascot, am I," all the way through. We were wet through and afterwards went into hospitality like drowned rats.
At the london to brighton hog with my girlfriend and her Bristol city supporting brother and dad. What a match i went mental when we equalised. Then the final if we lost i would have never been able to live it down
In a bar in Newcastle with another Albion fan and loads of Toon lads (didn't know any of them..... )
They were taking the piss at 2-0, but when we equalised, I ran round this pub shouting and screaming like a big girl, and bizarrely they all started rooting for us during the pens. Well thats how I remember it..
H or J block. One of the most memorable nights of football I've ever experienced. So many ups and downs, so wet, an actual atmosphere at Withdean, that goal from Virgs is the most mental I think I've ever gone in my life for a goal, and the drama of a shoot-out. Got it on tape so I might have to watch the last 15 minutes again tonight.
D block - Great night. All a bit of a blur now, it all seemed to happen so fast, from being down and out, I was literally about to leave my seat and head to the exit, then all of a sudden it all changed. A goal some penalties a fiv ehour queue for tickets and an amazing day in cardiff followed and now look where we are and where swindon are.
At home, watching on Sky. I had a ticket but had just come out of hospital on the previous Tuesday and was in no fit state to drive half the length of the country and sit in the pissing rain.
When Swindon missed the last penalty I ran with the stripes on from my lounge out of the front door into the street screaming 'Oi Oi you F**kers' at the top of my voice, twitching many a curtain on the way.
I think the neighbours thought I should have been certified given that this was in the middle of Warwickshire and I was acting like England had won the world cup.
The operation I had was on my throat - The next day I couldn't speak. All worth it though.
I'm remember the train I got on, the 18:52 from Hove to Victoria, failing to stop at Preston Park. I was chatting to a lad on the train who I met at Hove station when, as the train got into Preston Park, I noticed it was still going quite fast. I said to him "I don't think he's gonna stop" and "he said I think you're right" - I thought bollocks I'm not missing this game so I promptly pulled the cord and the train screeched to a halt. My carriage had already gone through the platform so we had to run back 3 carriages to get off - along with about 30 other albion fans who piled off as well by now. In the end I could of not bothered pulling the cord, turned up 2 hours late, and still not missed anything!
The sports cafe was awesome, I had spent the day at the cricket and turned up just before kick off really quite drunk. I nearly hit that one swindon fan, and when we scored I just ran up to him and laughed in his face.
The fatboy slim songs and we are the champion songs they put on after the game just added to the whole thing. Top night out.
I was in the Walk-about in Brighton watching on the big screen, saw the first 90mins but then popped over the road for a Punk gig. Got text messages about what was going on, went mental in the Pit when Virgo scored then even more so when we won, including getting pass the tight security to get onto the stage and dive off whilst shouting out Seagulls.....marvelous
F block and soaking wet. Got home and found the stupid Sky system had only recorded the penalty shoot out. So I have never seen Virg's goal since.
However, the shoot out coverage is superb as at the beginning there is a close up of a Swindon fan just shaking his head and saying "F*ck It" with a look of total disbelief on his face.
I love to watch his reaction just as much as the goals.
I feel really sorry him.....
Ha ha.... no I don't, he should follow a BIG TEAM!!!!
