Brighton v Newcastle - Player Ratings

Thunder Bolt

Silly old bat
Ankergren 8 - parried out into danger area, otherwise not tested first half, couple of important late saves - from greer deflection and stayed big in a one on one
bridge 8.5 - chased lost cause to cross for first goal, generally good performance
el ab 7.5 - outmuscled a few times, a few silly moments
greer 8 - good commanding performance, cleaning up spills, good late block in the ding moments
Lopez 8.5 - really starting to show his quality
orlandi 8.5 - well taken goal
bridcutt 9 - bossed midfield
hammond 8 - constantly getting involved, poor shot early on, a little slow, but generally good
dicker 9 - good passes, really pressuring their players when they have the ball
Barnes 8 - needless comical dive when could have perhaps broken through, otherwise generally good, positive contribution
CMS 7.5 - worked hard generally good, but not involved as much as everyone would probably like, lost ball first thing due to being week in possession, poor first touch ended early break away, plays the ball a little too far in front of him making it easy to nick possession

Lualua 8 - seemed up for it, not sure he managed to achieve much, but still good
Hoskin 8.5 - Well taken goal, timed his run perfectly, constant threat after he came on. More game time.
Crofts n/a - Good one two with lopez to draw to newcastle player and created room for Hoskins and lopez for the second goal, but no on long enough to rate.

That's exactly how I saw it and agree with the ratings.

Some people are rating players by their predjucies, rather than how they actually played today.

CMS 7.5? He struggles when his back is to goal, far too often he lost possession the ball just doesn't stick to him up there. Can't remember any hugely positive contributions bar hurrying defenders.

Ankergren 7. Better distribution than Kuszczak, but does not command the area in the same way. Very able deputy based on today's performance. Couple of good stops.
Lopez 8. Excellent performance all round. Keep him at RB. Better than Bruno.
Greer 7. One of his best games recently.
El Abd 7. Ditto.
Bridge 8. Amazed he got to that ball before it crossed the line to cross for Orlandi's goal. Class.
Bridcutt 9. Superb performance. Couple of poor passes and was robbed of the ball on one occasion when not paying attention, but otherwise pure class.
Hammond 8. Very impressed apart from one occasion when he lost the ball in a dangerous position. Gets better every game.
Orlandi 9. An excellent acquisition. Classy goal. All round great performance.
Dicker 9. Did a good job out there today. Brings a needed quality to the team.
Barnes 8. Good to have him back to his best.
CMS 5. Only poor performance today.

Subs:
Lua Lua 7. One excellent shot and won a couple of corners. Not quite at his best.
Hoskins 8. Looked sharp. Nicely taken goal. I would like to see him start ahead of CMS.
Crofts 6. Not on long. Looked OK.

Class - looked good from the back of the East Stand upper (Can I have V571 every time please?), brilliant on video. Best day at the Amex so far, the younger Pottings enjoyed it and they even managed to get full size burgers and all the extras in their kiddy meal boxes.

I would say don't underestimate the importance of hurrying opponents. Our worst defensive performances include us standing off opponents and giving them time and space to pick out passes. Him being where he was gave the defenders pause for thought when bridge was chasing the ball, giving orlandi more time. His energy and running around also help occupy defenders giving space for other players, if he didn't put the effort in he does, our opponents would be free to double up more often, snuffing out any threat elsewhere in our team.

Eh? It was a great ball not a lost cause.

'Lost cause' overstates it, but he only just go to it before it rolled out, it's the sort of ball other left backs wouldn't bother chasing because it requires so much effort to get to it before it goes out.

Dicker done that also today, the difference being he contributed massively to our team performance. We may as well stick Mo Farah up front if you want someone to chase and hurry.

You can see the difference in quality when Hoskins came on. Proper football brain who made a very intelligent run looking across the line, I don't see that in CMS locker. CMS is a great trier and an instinctive finisher when the ball is played in front of him, he won't get that that often the way we play. Quite simply he has to improve his touch, technique and awareness when his back is to goal.

Agreed with this. Amazing effort by Bridge, really rate him highly.

The weird NSC tradition of marking down a goal keeper for "not having anything to do".

How about a ten for a clean sheet minus a point for that shot he didn't hold.

What did he do to suggest he was average?

Not saying it was his fault as the ball didn't seem to fall to him all game, however, how can anyone suggest a player with no shots on goal, no assists & not beating his marker can be given anything above a 3 or 4 is totally blinkered

Mackail-smiths contribution was more centred around what he did off the ball, he dragged his marker all over the place creating space for others. He may not have caught the eye as much as some others but his part in the game was vital.

Great performance today - We really looked up for it against a poor Newcastle team

GK - Ankeregen - 7 Distribution generally good and made an excellent save right at the death
RB - Lopez - 8.5 - Second best player behind Bridcutt. Most importantly defended well, but his passing and touch were superb not least his wonderfully weighted slide rule pass for Hoskins goal.
LB - Bridge - 8 Great assist for the first goal and looked strong and composed throughout.
CB - El-ABD - 7.5 Was on the wind up all game but that shouldn't conceal another strong defensive display.
CB - Greer - 7.5 Still don't get why he has been the subject of negative threads, his not standing out like last year but his been consistently good all season.
CM - Bridcutt - 9 - MOTM another stunning midfield display, wonderful goal saving block at 1-0 the highlight of his afternoon.
CM - Hammond - 7.5 Tidy and unfussy, was well disciplined after an early yellow.
CM - Dicker - 8 - Tired in the last twenty which is understandable, but an excellent player. His one of our only players who passes the ball with a purpose, always looking to fizz it in first time and get our attacks moving at a quicker pace. Deserves an extended run in the team.
LM - Orlandi - 8 - I rate him highly and another good display as he feels his way back after injury. Stunning technique for the goal.
RM - Barnes - 7 - As always got through plenty of hard work, held the ball well and looks a lot more comfortable in possession recently.
STR- CMS - 5 - 100% work rate and commitment but nothing really fell for him and he can't really play with his back to goal, which bearing in mind our style his going to have to improve.

Subs
Lua Lua - 7 - Lively but too often makes the wrong choices.
Hoskins - 7.5 - Really well taken goal, like Dicker deserves an extended run in the team.
Crofts - 7 - Maybe should have come on slightly earlier as I felt our midfield was tiring. Solid when he came on.

Casper - 7 - clean sheet. Didn't put a foot wrong. Good shot stopper
Lopez -9- my MOTM. Think his best position is a right back
El Abd -8- real passionate performance. Wound up amoebi no end! Big improvement since Watford
Greer -8- looked composed at the back. Decision making was quality
Bridge -7- great going forward. Hade to deal with newcastles best player , Obertan
Bridcutt -9- complete performance! Gets better every game! Hope we can hold onto Him
Dicker -8- superb! End to end performance. Made great tackles and always wanted the ball
Hammond -6- made a couple of silly lunges and looked very slow
Barnes -8- Defended at set pieces excellently today and although didn't score , he got in the positions.
Orlandi -8- took his goal well and used his experienced throughout
CMS -6- plays well with Barnes. Made a couple of great tackles too. Defended from the front

Lua lua -6- always better as a sub! Tried too hard though. Keep it simple!
Hoskins -8- great composure to score. Seemed to take an age to go in
Crofts -6- came on when we seemed to be losing shape and helped us regroup

Casper Ankergren 8 Clean sheet and never in much doubt. Superb with his feet.
David Lopez 8 Superb performance and what a through ball for the decisive second.
Gordon Greer 8 Fantastic performance, so much better than some people would have you believe.
Adam El-Abd 7 Nothing out of the ordinary, very standard El-Abd display and all it needed really.
Wayne Bridge 8 Different class. None of the Newcastle players wanted to try and chase him.
Liam Bridcutt 9 Our midfield genius is back on song.
Deam Hammond 8 Positionally very good, and good use of the ball mostly.
Gary Dicker 7 I thought his influence faded second half but looked good and clever on the ball.
Andrea Orlandi 9 Everything he does is class, superb goal and hopefully the first of many.
Ashley Barnes 8 Worked hard, which is important, and unlucky not to be set up when very well placed in the box...
Craig Mackail-Smith 8 Almost trying too hard, the ball just doesn't drop where he runs to. Massively underappreciated.

Subs
Kazenga LuaLua 7 Threatened but never produced.
Will Hoskins 7 Good finish for the goal, but didn't work hard and didn't really show much desire.
Andrew Crofts n/a Came on with nil against, and finished with nil against so job done.
