Photo taken sometime before 1958. Interesting features are in this photograph, the west wall of the Alhambra Theatre (Palladium Cinema) just visible, the Cannon Brewery with the chimney and beyond that up the hill a part of the Church of the Resurrection, used for the last of its life as the Central Meat Market. This quite old Brighton street has now been completely obliterated.

On the subject of the bombings of Brighton during the war, okay this thread started quite a while ago! My mother as a young girl was actually in the cinema, just around the corner from the bottom of North Road, Gloucester Place, I believe, when the Germans bombed one saturday morning. Her mother, along with many other mums were shopping in the Open Market area, when they were told the bomb had hit the cinema. Of course they all legged it back to the scene, to discover the church next door had been hit and not the cinema. The cinema I seem to recall became a bingo hall in later years, a place from which we use to pick up and/or drop off my nan in the mid 70s.
